Flyers get bruiser at deadline

POSTED: Monday, February 28, 2011, 3:11 PM

The Flyers did not make any major deals before Monday's 3 p.m. trade deadline.

The players couldn't have been more pleased.

“We’ve been playing extremely well all year and we’re pretty confident with the group of guys that’s in here,” center Blair Betts said after a grueling practice in Voorhees. “ There’s a lot of good chemistry, and sometimes, you just don’t want to mess with it.”

Right at the deadline, the Flyers acquired 6-5, 228-pound left winger Tom Sestito (2 goals, 2 assists in 9 games) from Columbus for a pair of prospects, forwards Greg Moore and Michael Chaput, who was their first pick (a third-rounder) in last year's draft. Chaput was unsigned and was playing in juniors.

Sestito, who has spent most of this season in the minors, will be sent to the Phantoms and may be recalled later in the year, GM Paul Holmgren said.

“He had 30-some points with Springfield, which would make him our second-leading (AHL) scorer,” Holmgren said. “He’s a big kid that we always liked, and we think he has a chance to play at some point for us, whether it be later this year” or next. “Certainly next year, he’ll get a good look.”

With Springfield, Sestito had 11 goals, 21 assists and 192 peanlty minutes in 46 games this season. There's a chance he will replace Dan Carcillo (an UFA after this season) next season.

On Twitter, Sestito said he was happy to be with the Flyers' organization.

"Rumor has it Philly likes seeing an ass kicking! Hope to see you soon and will give you what you want!" he said in a tweet.

Holmgren explored other deals, “but nothing came up that made sense for us. As I’ve said, I like our team….and we’re ready to go.”

There were just 16 NHL deals Monday, the lowest on deadline day since 2000, when 12 trades were made. There were 31 trades on deadline day last year.

Hey all you guys who want to send our young guys to the airport....do the names Patrick Sharpe, Justin Williams, Ruslan Fedotenko mean anything to you? They're all young ex-flyers who we gave up on....and oh yea I think they all won a cup already. Have patience give everyone a chance to fail at least. Guess you also wanted to trade Brierre two seasons ago too, am I right? But you loved Hatcher I bet. Personally I think we gave up on Boucher too soon also. Hang in there!

Its possible when playoff time comes Leighton could just be added without waivers.

In regard to the question about calling up Leighton, he would have to clear re-entry waivers even during the playoffs. _ Sam Carchidi

Looks like another run at the cup without that stud goalie that everyone wants.

If we ever are desperate enough to put Leaky Leighton on our roster again, there's no hope of a Cup.
