ST. PAUL, Minn. _ Flyers goalie Michael Leighton, subbing for the injured Ray Emery, deserves better.
Yes, he gift-wrapped two goals Saturday that, as it turned out, gave Minnesota a 2-1 win.
But Leighton is the guy who seemingly rescued the Flyers season as he went 8-0-1 with one no-decision in his first 10 starts after Emery was originally sidelined .
In his last three starts, including Saturday’s, the Flyers have scored a grand total of one goal for Leighton.
    One.
So the latest loss falls just as much on the offense as it does Leighton.
In their last four defeats, the Flyers first two lines have zero even-strength goals _ and just one score on the power play.
Oh, and the Flyer had 72 shots and one goal in their last two games.

That’s not going to get it done _ even if Bernie Parent in his prime was in the nets.
Asked after Saturday’s loss if he planned to make lineup changes when the Flyers host the New Jersey Devils on Monday, coach Peter Laviolette replied: “I’m not there yet.”
But don’t be surprised if newcomer Ville (rhymes with Philly) Leino replaces Darroll Powe as the left wing on the Jeff Carter line.
That’s not meant as a slight to the hard-working Powe, but Laviolette has to try SOMETHING.
The Flyers continued a puzzling trend: When they fall behind, they stay behind. They are now 1-16 when they trail after two periods.

The Flyers had plenty of opportunities Saturday. They outshot the Wild, 39-30, but always seemed a step behind for a rebound or a loose puck around goalie Anton Khudobin, who was superb in his first NHL start.
“Of course I was nervous. It was my first start. In front of 18,000 screaming people,” the rookie said with a smile. “I said to myself, ‘It’s OK. Just play your game.’ ”
The Flyers’ power play continued to struggle. They went 0 for 4 and failed to get off a shot in their last two power plays. They were 0 for 8 on the PP in their last two games _ a 1-0 loss to sad-sack Edmonton and last night’s defeat.
“It’s the extension of the five on five,” coach Peter Laviolette said. “Right now, they’re not going in.”
Leighton, a standup guy, pointed at himself for the loss.
“I let it two soft goals,” he said. “I take the blame.”
He also summed up the Flyers’ offensive woes succinctly.
“We’re at the point now where I think we’re a little frustrated, so we’re just throwing everything at the net,” he said.   “We have a lot of skilled guys on this team that can make plays. When we were scoring a lot of goals last month, we were making plays and we had a lot of confidence. I think we have to get back to that.”

Breakaways. The shot total (39) was the Flyers’ highest since they had 43 in an Oct. 27 game at Washington. The Flyers lost that game, too, 4-2….Mike Richards and Matt Carle clanked shots off the post….The Flyers’ first two lines had 19 shots on goal. They combined for 39 shots and zero goals in the last two games…..The Flyers fell to eighth in the Eastern Conference. They went 1-2 on the trip, which started with a 3-0 win in Calgary. The Flyers play a home-and-home series with the Devils on Monday and Wednesday.

If only they were able to make that trade. If only. I thought this team was trying to win NOW?

I've been hoping this team would start to turn it on. I've been watching them hit posts, miss open nets, and was hoping their luck will change. After the last 2 games, I'm beginning to believe that this team needs to be broken up. They are just not getting it done. It can't be the goaltending...they lost 1-0 to Edmonton, and 2-1 to Minnesota. Nobody is scoring, nobody. It's frustrating to watch.

No, "Ville" does not rhyme with "Philly"... He's Finnish, isn't he? So it's VILLE with an "e", not a "y" at the end. Hopefully he can score a few goals for the Flyers, but I'm not that hopeful. If Briere, Gagne, Richards and Carter can't produce, we're in trouble here. Leighton is certainly NOT to blame for this loss.

This team stinks, frustrating to watch, time for management to be shown the exit door. To even consider giving Emery an extension is irresponsible.

Pronger got burned last night about 6 or 7 times by my count, which is pretty much average for him. He's had a few good games, but certainly hasn't been the guy advertised. What snarl? What physical play? This guy can't even catch the vast majority of forwards that simply skate circles around him. Not worth what we paid for him, not by a long shot. If we had Lupul's 25 goals and Sbisa's defense, we'd be in better shape than we are right now. Great idea - let's give away a proven forward, a great young defenseman who will likely be a top-10 small d-man in a few years, and one of our last remaining draft picks for a formerly great defenseman in the twilight of his career. Pronger can't outskate very many forwards, and we saw it last night. Anaheim is laughing all the way to the playoffs. And until the slumping forwards (i.e., pretty much the top 6) sit on the bench while the hungry bottom 6 keep this team's playoff hopes alive, nothing's gonna chance. The top 6 all have fat long-term contracts and no-trade clauses - the only incentive they have to play hard is riding the pine. Until that happens, nothing will change for this team. This team has a stable of forwards most teams would have killed for in the beginning of the season, and it's guys like Asham, Carcillo, Powe, JVR and Giroux keeping them in the playoff hunt. Together these guys don't make what Briere or Gagne or Hartnell make, and yet they all have WAY more production. What's wrong with this picture?

There is something wrong with this team internally. They can play w/any team as they have shown.Yes Gagne,Hairball & Danny Boy are a big hit on the cap, contibuting nothing, but everyone has to be on the same page.Laviolette is the coach Philly has needed for a long time. Now the Flyers org needs to get a "real" GM at season's end to straighten out the mess.By the way, this team will not make the playoffs!!

Couldn't agree more with Unjustly, these guys are a bunch of stiffs with no touch at all. Time for Richie to play 3rd line checking center we need someone who can actually decide they want to score and get it done. Too bad we all love to have 12 Podeins or Dineens as the forwards on the team, great hard working guys who can only score when it goes in off their arse. Can someone please explain how Hartnell still skates PP and all of those top line minutes? I would move him Gaggy and Brier down and let the kids try, results could not be worse.

paul holmgren was great turning this team around after the 06-07 season. as great as he was then is as bad as he is now. i swear hes trying to run this team into the ground now. first he trades umberger, then trades lupul for an on the downside pronger, lets knuble walk. replaces lupul's and knuble's 52 goals with lapierierre's 7 goals. replaces biron with the very mediocre emery. oh and i heard last night that we couldve had kovalchuk, but this genius refused to give up jvr or giroux. are you kidding me???

He better NOT give up Giroux. He seems like the only "skill" guy we have who actually deminstrates "skill." He's playing his heart out on the ice. This is, what, his first full year? He's incredible out there. Imagine what he'd be like if he had guys around him. Ah, we can dream.

In no way am I comparing Richards and Carter to Crosby and Malkin, but when the Pens need an offensive jolt, Bylsma puts them out on the ice at the same time (5-on-5, not just the powerplay). Or how about moving JVR & Giroux up to the top 6 and move Hartnell & Gagne down in the rotation for a while. They need more skill in the top 6 forwards. It seems like Hartnell can barely stay on his skates any more and Gagne looks absolutely lost when the puck hits his stick. The real problem is, they need a finisher in the top 6, and it appears they just don't have one on the roster nor the cap space to get one.

Replace Hartnell. Also, that 4 on 4 was ridiculous.

"Laviolette has to try SOMETHING" Bench Hartnell. The only time the Flyers get any offensive pressure is when the 3rd and 4th lines are on the ice. I keep forgeting that Gagne is even on the team. At the end of the year when the Flyers give out all of their awards to the team members, every single award should go to Michael Leighton. He is the only reason they are still in the playoff hunt. The Comcast propaganda machine is out of control. Last night Jones defended Hartnell by saying the reason Hartnell could not handle the pass from Bartulis was because the pass was too perfect. All he had to do was move his stick forward and he would have had a goal.

Stop giving big chunks of ice time to players who don't deserve it, namely Gagne, Briere, and Hartnell. Is ice time now given based on salary? Play the players that work the hardest, not because this guy has scored big points 3/4/5 years ago. Those 3 should be on the 4th line, or scratched from the game. The GM, if it's still Holmgren after this season needs to buy out at least 2 of those 3 and free up cap space for some younger players who want to work hard and get to the NHL. I've seen enough of those two frenchies.
