While many of the Eastern Conference contenders got better today, the Flyers took a step backward.
All because they were backed into a corner by their lack of cap space.
So they traded energetic winger Scottie Upshall to Phoenix for tough-guy winger Dan Carcillo, the NHL’s leader with 174 penalty minutes .
My first reaction: The Broad Street Bullies are being resurrected _ and that won’t work in today’s speed-first NHL.(Carcillo and Flyers winger Riley Cote are second in the NHL with 18 fights each.)
Still, general manager Paul Holmgren deserves a mulligan. In two years, he has transformed the Flyers from a laughing stock to one of the Eastern Conference’s elite teams.
One bad week _ and it was a forgettable one for the man they call Homer _ shouldn’t mask his superb two-plus years as the Flyers’ GM.
Cap mismanagement caused the Flyers to dump salaries in the last week. In order to activate Danny Briere, they tried to slip popular veterans Glen Metropolit and Ossi Vaananen through waivers, but both were claimed.
Then the Flyers had to send flashy Claude Giroux _ one of their most productive players recently _ to the minors so they could call up a defenseman to temporarily replace the flu-ridden Kimmo Timonen.
And today they traded Upshall _ whose speed and hustle will be missed in the playoffs _ for a player who has three goals and a reputation for taking foolish penalties.
Oh, and the Flyers also had to throw in a 2011 second-round draft pick.
    Talk about overpaying!
So, in the last week, the Flyers’ close-knit chemistry has been shaken and they have lost considerable depth.
Again, all because they needed to clear cap space.
   Carcillo’s cap hit is $884,000, Upshall’s is $1.225 million.
That means the Flyers cleared $341,000. They now have about $900,000 of cap room available and have flexibility if they want to recall a player from the AHL Phantoms in the event of a injury or illness. Now they won’t have to send Giroux back to the minors to free cap space.
Carcillo should become a fan favorite. He is a fearless checker and a good fighter (9-5-4 this season).. And the Flyers are hoping he can regain his modest scoring touch (13 goals in 57 games last year) and become more than a fighter.
Later today, after picking up minor-league defenseman Kyle McLaren for a sixth-round draft pick, the Flyers were working on a more significant deal, but it fell apart. Hence, their biggest move of the day was the acquisition of Carcillo.
It wasn’t a good trade, by any stretch of the imagination. But Carcillo will offer protection for smallish forwards Giroux and Briere _ I’m assuming he’ll be on their line _ and his hard-nosed style will keep opponents on their toes.
Fans are disappointed by today's developments. They liked Upshall’s hustle. They were hoping the Flyers upgraded their defense by adding Jay Bouwmeester or Chris Pronger.
But give Holmgren a mulligan. The talented Flyers didn’t get better today, but, thanks to the GM’s moves over the last two years, they still have a legitimate chance to go deep into the playoffs.

Don't know much about this dude Carcillo but he sounds like the type of player I will grow to love. I liked Upshall alot, his hustle and fire, but I guess they had to do something. And in reality we have two defensemen with more points than he had. Of course, what this deal will mean to the chemistry is the real tale, I know he was pretty tight with a few of the guys. Losing the draft pick as well makes this deal look worse, but I am sure most fans will grow to love Carcillo. At least until the Flyers lose a game because they gave a PP goal after he takes a stupid penalty. They should start a stat that indicates how many penalties a player draws from the opposition. That might be interesting to see...

The cold weather in Philly must of frozen quite a few GM's brain cells back East from the deals made. First the Eagles let Dawkins leave (ok he's getting long on tooth), then Litto for a NY song and dance and now Upshall, who willed the Flyer's in to the conference finals last year for a player whom Wayne Gretzky could not keep under control nor talk sense to, please. The weather is not the only thing that is hot here in AZ I'm seriously second guessing my sanity for purchasing the NHL&NFL TV packages.

I just saw a clip that someone posted of his shootout goal against Atlanta. Check out his little smirk before he begins, and scores. I think I like this dude already... reminded me of Dale Hunter somehow, and he actually wins most of his fights! I checked him out already on Hockeyfights.com... We will see I suppose, but it should be exciting to see how it all pans out at any rate.

Ed Snider has made his annual goon call. Holmgren, (I wonder how many concussions) is happy to oblige. You can't bring back the 1970s. I can see Ed at the rules meetings arguing for more fighting in the NHL. Things were better when the whole bench could clear for a brawl. The third man in rule is for wimps!! Ed will argue the fans like to see two or three guys beating up on one. It was much easier to evaluate bulling talent than it is to find hockey talent. Ed will argue that in a down economy, the NHL needs more fighting to draw fans.

Horrible. We already are near the top for penalty minutes. Lets get rid of a young good bench player and scorer for another goon. McLaren is a career minor-leaguer. Banner & Reid made this deal obviously.

Shoulda traded Briere for another goaltender. Woulda cleared up cap room, and kept Upshal for an upgrade in goaltending (which is isnt hard with overrated Biron)

Homer did what he had to do not what he wanted to do, it is part of the game today with the salary cap and all. I loved Upshall's play but we have others that will step in and do the same thing. We need a goalie and that will wait till the off season now but that needs to be a priorty for next year.

Just like most people here my initial reaction to the trade was it's idiotic. Giving up a faster, higher scoring player that has a knack for getting under opponents skin and getting them off their game and throwing in a second round pick besides for one that is not much more than a fighter is asinine in today's NHL. Then I started thinking about all the games I was watching on tv where the Flyers were being out hit, out hustled and seemed physically overmatched through most of the game and started to see a little sense to this. I remember watching quite a few NHL teams that had more than one real enforcer. Riley Cote does a good job in his role but when he's hurt or in the penalty box it seemed the Flyers were physically at the other team's mercy at times. I still believe they overpaid but at least I'm willing to wait and see how this works out. He just may be enough of a presence on the ice to clear up some space for the Flyers other scorers and make them more effective. Time will tell.

Nezhy - Name one team that would take on Breier's contract right now? You just can't throw names out there and expect GM's to say, "well, okay since you offered". Stick to complaining about philly sports and playing arm chair GM with your friends. Willy25 - Bitter Toronto fan? 11th in the conference is tough every year huh? No good picks, no playoffs. Fly58 - Good thinking but not quite there yet - Biron, Nitty, Knuble, Alberts, Guenin, Kane, Raduns are all UFA's, RFA's or salary coming off. I love the spirit guys but stick to something you know....please?

If they cleared only $341,000 of cap space, how did they get to $900,000? I thought they started the day with very little?
