Flyers trying to end Sharks' domination

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Flyers do not know the way to San Jose.

Strike that.

The Flyers do not know the way to BEAT San Jose.

They have lost eight straight to the Sharks, during which they have been outscored, 39-22.

On Tuesday, the Flyers get a chance to stop the skid as they end a four-game road trip against the fading Sharks.

The Flyers are 2-1 on the trip, including a pair of wild 5-4 comeback wins — one in overtime against Winnipeg, another in a shootout against Calgary.

In the latter victory, Scott Hartnell scored his 29th and 30th goals of the season as the Flyers overcame a 3-0 deficit. Ilya Bryzgalov overcame a shaky first period and stopped four of five shots in the shootout, one in which he was much more aggressive than usual and challenged the shooters.

San Jose, coming off a 2-6-1 road trip, has slipped into seventh in the Western Conference. The Sharks acquired forwards Daniel Winnik and T.J. Galiardi from Colorado on Monday, hoping they can help during the stretch run.

The Flyers were idle at Monday’s trade deadline, but they recently added Pavel Kubina (6-4, 258) and Nick Grossman (6-4, 230) in separate deals that they believe will bolster the defense.

The Flyers are aiming for their first two-game winning streak since Jan. 10-12, when they defeated Carolina and the Islanders.

* * *

The Sharks' Todd McLellan will not coach Tuesday's game because of concussion-like symptoms, suffered when hit by an inadvertent stick Sunday in Minnesota.

"While Todd will continue to provide his input on the team, we have full confidence in the abilities of assistant coaches Matt Shaw and Jay Woodcroft to lead the team in Todd’s absence," San Jose GM Doug Wilson said in a statement.

 Breakaways. The last time the Flyers didn't lose against the Sharks was in 2003, when Jeff Hackett and Evgeni Nabokov had shutouts in a scoreless tie.....Danny Briere is trying to snap a 16-game goal-less streak….San Jose goalie Antti Niemi could face the Flyers for the first time since he helped Chicago defeat them to capture the 2010 Stanley Cup….Bryzgalov is expected to make his sixth straight start....Logan Couture, the Sharks' high-scoring all-star, could miss the game with a lower-body injury.

    What's the over/under on Bryz giving up at least one goal in the first five minutes.....now that's funny

    I predict if the Flyers score 5 goals they have a 50-50 chance of winning.

    I think if the Sharks score first tonight, I might look for a bridge to drive off of...this team needs to get up early in a game for a change.

    I'm gonna go out on a limb here. A very long, fragile limb. And say that Bryz gets a shutout tonight. Book it!
