GM Paul Holmgren told The Inquirer that Flyers' coach Peter Laviolette will be given an extension and that he expects the deal to be completed within a week - and perhaps by the end of the weekend.

Laviolette has directed the Flyers to back-to-back 47-win seasons. You have to go back to the mid 1980s to find a time when the Flyers had more victories in consecutive seasons.

Holmgren said after the season that Laviolette would get an extension, but the general manager has been busy with free-agent matters. Now the sides are close to hammering out a deal.

Laviolette, 47, was named the team's coach early in the 2009-10 season and he led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Flyers have lost in the conference semifinals the last two seasons.

The Flyers are 112-73-26 under Laviolette in the regular season, and 23-23 in the playoffs.

lilja & Shelly both need to go. Even if they are under contract, they are liabilities on the ice.. Just swallow hard, pay them and ship them home.

Still do not understand why Paul Holmgren is not improving our blue line with Michal Rozsival or Carlo Colaiacovo or both.

Why is Lilja not waived and why did we sign Gervais?

To the "inksters" (Sam and Frank), can't you guys come up with any kind of story at least every 2 or 3 days, I mean it doesn't look like you work too much during the off season. If I were the editor I wouldn't be liking you guys too much right now, just sayin'...

Can't say I support this decision. Lavy has no team D philosophy and I'm really not sure he knows how to teach fundamental defensive techniques. The same defensive mistakes continue to happen by multiple defensemen...that's not the players, that's the coach. I would have waited until the year was completed to evaluate. Makes no sense to do it now.

BAD BAD Decision. What is Homer thinking.
Lavy IS NOT the right guy.. As a matter of fact...all the facts point in the opposite direction.
Homer sees the same issues continuing each of the last 3 years even with 10 new player and thinks the coach deserves an extension? What a joke.
Most penalized team = no dicipline = bad coaching.
10x took he needed to call a time out within the first 3-4 minutes because the team was not prepared to take the ice = very bad coaching.
Cannot thinnk fast enough to alter a game plan when "defensive" minded teams like NJ or NY shut them down.
Hint, try coming up the middle instead of continually forcing the play up the boards.
Tell your D to stop blindly throwing the puck away or forcing bad passes.
It's been going on for years now and i'm sick of seeing it.
He tolerates and accepts lazy play or at some points NO PLAY. Have you ever told the team its' ice hockey and it's ok to hit someone once in a while.
No one is held responsible for a lack positional play, but Lavy should be. No one knows where their team mates are going to be in a given situation because they have no decernable system to follow.
Just look at the way LA broke out against NJ for an example of what I'm referring to.
LA doesn't have better players than the Flyers.(heck they are the Flyers).
What they had was a far superior system in place the team buys into and sticks to. = bad coaching by Lavy.
Lavy caught lightning in a bottle in Carolina, but notice how they dumped him 1 1/2 yrs. later.
HOMER Please don't stick us with this guy another year.. he's clueless
Dump him now..he doesn't deserve or hasen't earned an extension.

I salute Holmgren and Ed Snider for getting a bunch of young and talented hockey players to play for the Flyers. But those two are also apparently comfortable with a system which does not put all of that talent to the task of goal prevention. FlyerFan is right, the Flyers give their all to score, and they often leave their defensive responsibilities to the goal-tender or an outmanned defenseman to sort out. This is all about coaching. It's all about system. I want to see relentless forechecking, and annoyingly consistent checking for 3 periods a night. Instead of dumping the puck, how about trying to maintain possession? (The other team probably won't score while we possess the puck).

Oh the wisdom and insight in these comments! I'm all a-tingle! It's so exciting to read where the true insight into the future of my favorite hockey club can be found! The profundity! The wit! The deep, philosophical ramblings of the insiders who truly understand the subtleties of running a professional hockey team! And the obvious choice to replace Lavy? Hmmm? That's right, everybody knows that a guaranteed cup-winning coach is standing next to you (you know who you are) in your mom's basement begging for a chance to coach the Flyers! Terry Murray? Hopefully he will be a positive addition to the coaching staff this year, but gimme a break!!! Stop kicking your dog and screaming at your wife and enjoy a team that has delivered some great hockey in the past few years. If it's championship or nothing, why bother following any sport? Lighten up, losers!!!

Loser...Sounds like you're referring to Lavi in his last two conference semifinal appearances. There are a number of coaches available who know there is more to hockey than offense: Bob Hartley, who coached a Stanley Cup-winner in Colorado, Benoit Groulx has been a Head Coach for 10 seasons and won three league Q titles. Guy Carbonneau and Larry Robinson might be enticed to return as head coach.
"championship or nothing?" Yeah, I still remember Bernie and Clarkie skating around the Spectrum with the Cup.

THis is Philly and we are good with our beloved Flyers extending a coach who plays a light in the loafer line up. Shelley never plays, he hates to play Rinaldo and Simmons is more of a scorer. That is it. Ole Pete abhors intimidation and turns the other cheek when guys like Giroux get run at. He is a pure whuss. Why are we not wiping out opponents trying to come over our blue line, flying into the corners and burying those who have the nerve to try to get in front of our goalie. Pete's flyers actually throw lots of no hitters. Pete is all about passing and finess and the city of philly is good with that? YEah right.

This fits perfectly in line with Holmgren's off-season moves this year. This too, is completely baffling. The only good move this franchise has made this year, has been the hiring of Terry Murray. Murray will be the Flyers head coach in December.

Brilliant! Extend the contract of a guy still legally obligated to work for you even though he hasn't won squat here. Good chance Lavvy will be gone at seson's end when they are eliminated n the irs round by one of the top 4 seeded teams ahead of the. No way this team wins their division whe the competition imroved while the Flyers added nothing. Throw away more money Flyers. The Rangers and Penguins are laughing at you.

///Yeah, he did - against the number 8 seed Oilers who somehow managed to reach the finals. And in his 2010 trip to the finals he beat finals he beat the number 8 seed Canadiens in the ECF.//

In 05-06, when the Hurricanes beat the Oilers for the Cup, the team finished with 52 wins and 112 points. They lead the defending cup Champs, the Lightning, by 20 points. In the playoffs they also beat the #3 seeded NJ Devils and #4 seeded Buffalo Sabres, so don't make it seem like that playoff run was a cakewalk, because it wasn't.

As far as beating a #8 seed goes, why not ask the Devils how hard it is. If it is so easy, they should have whupped up on the Kings this year.

Give me a break. Lavi needed seven games to beat the number 8 seed Oilers. But thanks for proving my point by mentioning the Devils. What did Lavi do against New Jersey? What has he done lately? Answer: he was 1-4 in the conference semis against NJ this year and 0-4 in the conference semis against the Bruins last year. That's 1-8. Show him the door.

Why extend a coach who has a 1-8 record in his last 2 conference semifinal series? The other teams have figured out his "pressure the puck" system, the Flyers couldn't even get the puck out of their own zone against New Jersey. To those who will criticize me saying: "He won the Cup."

Considering the #8 seed just hoisted the Cup, and DOMINATED in doing so, I would say your reasoning misses the mark. All that matters is that you make the playoffs and are "hot" at that time. Seeds are pretty meaningless, especially since they are determined based on performance over a whole season, whereas (given trades, injuries, etc.) teams can be significantly different going into the playoffs than what their overall record (and corresponding seed) reflects.

I am okay with this I guess I would have loved to had them sign Larry Robinson as an asst coach he already took another job. lavy can' be blamed for our horrific goaltender with that said he seems to work well with the young guys on the team I would like to see his playoff record better the 23& 23 hopefully this year we turn the corner

This is the single dumbest post I've ever read. Terry Murray in the wings? Are you old enough to remember the "Murray System" which was a disaster? If we end up firing Lavy and replacing him with Murray I will become a Winnipeg Jet fan.

As a life long Flyers fan and born and raised Winnipeger, I'm not sure if that's a shot at my city or the Jets? Either way, it was still funny.
