Flyers, Lavy close to extension
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
GM Paul Holmgren told The Inquirer that Flyers' coach Peter Laviolette will be given an extension and that he expects the deal to be completed within a week - and perhaps by the end of the weekend.
Laviolette has directed the Flyers to back-to-back 47-win seasons. You have to go back to the mid 1980s to find a time when the Flyers had more victories in consecutive seasons.
Holmgren said after the season that Laviolette would get an extension, but the general manager has been busy with free-agent matters. Now the sides are close to hammering out a deal.
Laviolette, 47, was named the team's coach early in the 2009-10 season and he led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Flyers have lost in the conference semifinals the last two seasons.
The Flyers are 112-73-26 under Laviolette in the regular season, and 23-23 in the playoffs.

I like it. realnamepreferred
The team needs to become more
defensive minded under Lavy! olneyboy
Horrible coaching against the Devils. And enough with the timeouts already. Larry Brown
consider this your severance lavy!!!... no i like the aggression he shows but man you've gotta adjust, your not gonna beat boston the same way you do winnipeg kylebrunson1
Lackie sat on his thumb in games two to five against the Devils.Luckily Terry Murray is in the wings. quigly46- This is the single dumbest post I've ever read. Terry Murray in the wings? Are you old enough to remember the "Murray System" which was a disaster? If we end up firing Lavy and replacing him with Murray I will become a Winnipeg Jet fan.
Vituperator - As a life long Flyers fan and born and raised Winnipeger, I'm not sure if that's a shot at my city or the Jets? Either way, it was still funny.

I am okay with this I guess I would have loved to had them sign Larry Robinson as an asst coach he already took another job. lavy can' be blamed for our horrific goaltender with that said he seems to work well with the young guys on the team I would like to see his playoff record better the 23& 23 hopefully this year we turn the corner william20

dig it !
i think he's a good coach
he just needs a 'break the zone' feather for his hat
and NOT the old dump and run
Redwoodser- Why extend a coach who has a 1-8 record in his last 2 conference semifinal series? The other teams have figured out his "pressure the puck" system, the Flyers couldn't even get the puck out of their own zone against New Jersey. To those who will criticize me saying: "He won the Cup."
Yeah, he did - against the number 8 seed Oilers who somehow managed to reach the finals. And in his 2010 trip to the finals he beat finals he beat the number 8 seed Canadiens in the ECF.
- Considering the #8 seed just hoisted the Cup, and DOMINATED in doing so, I would say your reasoning misses the mark. All that matters is that you make the playoffs and are "hot" at that time. Seeds are pretty meaningless, especially since they are determined based on performance over a whole season, whereas (given trades, injuries, etc.) teams can be significantly different going into the playoffs than what their overall record (and corresponding seed) reflects.
///Yeah, he did - against the number 8 seed Oilers who somehow managed to reach the finals. And in his 2010 trip to the finals he beat finals he beat the number 8 seed Canadiens in the ECF.//
In 05-06, when the Hurricanes beat the Oilers for the Cup, the team finished with 52 wins and 112 points. They lead the defending cup Champs, the Lightning, by 20 points. In the playoffs they also beat the #3 seeded NJ Devils and #4 seeded Buffalo Sabres, so don't make it seem like that playoff run was a cakewalk, because it wasn't.
As far as beating a #8 seed goes, why not ask the Devils how hard it is. If it is so easy, they should have whupped up on the Kings this year. General Turgidson- Give me a break. Lavi needed seven games to beat the number 8 seed Oilers. But thanks for proving my point by mentioning the Devils. What did Lavi do against New Jersey? What has he done lately? Answer: he was 1-4 in the conference semis against NJ this year and 0-4 in the conference semis against the Bruins last year. That's 1-8. Show him the door.
Brilliant! Extend the contract of a guy still legally obligated to work for you even though he hasn't won squat here. Good chance Lavvy will be gone at seson's end when they are eliminated n the irs round by one of the top 4 seeded teams ahead of the. No way this team wins their division whe the competition imroved while the Flyers added nothing. Throw away more money Flyers. The Rangers and Penguins are laughing at you. schnitzelboy
