The Flyers on Saturday sent forward Chris VandeVelde to the AHL Phantoms, virtually assuring that Scott Laughton starts the season with the big-league team.

Later in the day, they placed defenseman Bruno Gervais and center Adam Hall on waivers. The Gervais move was expected, but the Hall decision was surprising. Hall is a hard-nosed, fouth-line forward who is excellent in the faceoff circle.

Laughton can stay for nine games before his entry-level deal would start. After nine games, the Flyers could keep him or send him back to his junior team.

If Gervais and Hall clear waivers Sunday, they could remain with the team or be sent to the Phantoms.

The Flyers could have more moves coming.

Colorado is danging forward John Mitchell (10 goals in 47 games last season) and a veteran defenseman (Andrej Meszaros?) could be the asking price. As of Saturday night, the Flyers had not talked to the Avs about Mitchell.

For now, 6-7 Hal Gill, a veteran defenseman, remains on the roster.

The Flyers will practice in Voorhees Sunday at 11:30 a.m. It is free and open to the public.
