The Flyers finished their prospects’ camp Thursday in a different manner -- with the players going grocery shopping together at a Voorhees Acme. They then attended a cooking class in South Philly.

"Every year, I try to bring something different," said Ian Laperriere, the Flyers’ director of player personnel.

Besides five days of on and off-ice drills and the cooking class, the players attended a sex-education class and received tips on being smart when posting things on the Internet.

A local chef talked to the players about the importance of nutrition and how it affects them.

“A lot of those guys are going to be on their own next year,” Laperriere said. “They went from (being with) mommy and daddy to a billet family, and now it’s on you. If you’re playing in the minors, you can’t eat at the restaurant every day. That’s probably the worst place you want to eat, with all the salt. We want those kids to be able to cook for themselves.”

Sam Morin, the 6-6 defenseman who was the Flyers’ first-round draft pick last month called the camp “amazing” and said he needs to improve his skating skills to get to the next level.

Laperriere was impressed with Morin.

"He does have all the qualities,” he said. “His biggest quality is he was here all week with a smile on his face and WANTS to learn. For me, that's Christmas when I see a kid like that."
