Flyers may have new-look lineup vs. Toronto
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
TORONTO: Two newcomers - forwards Jay Rosehill and Adam Hall _ could be in the Flyers’ lineup Thursday night in Toronto.
The Flyers need to do SOMETHING to shake up their road blues. They are 4-12-1 on the road this season, the Eastern Conference’s worst record.
Rosehill, the Flyers’ new enforcer after a trade with Anaheim for Harry Zolnierczyk, used to play for the Maple Leafs and said he would like nothing more than to face his former team.
Hall, signed off waivers from Tampa Bay, is expected to be used on the PK and on the fourth line.
The Flyers might have a fourth line with Sean Couturier centering Rosehill and Hall.
Goalie Steve Mason, acquired from Columbus on Wednesday for Michael Leighton and a third-round draft pick in 2015, took shots from Kurtis Foster and Tye McGinn at the Air Canada Centre at 11:30 Thursday morning.
Afterward, he said he was NOT starting tonight. lya Bryzgalov will make his 21st straight start.
Mason said he was thrilled to have a "clean slate" with the Flyers and admitted he lost his confidence in Columbus. His agent, Anton Thun, said he expected Mason to sign a one-year deal perhaps as early as next week and that the goalie was excited to be with the Flyers and to compete for the No. 1 job next year.
Said Mason: “I’m not sure what my role is now, I haven’t really been told. To me, that’s not my main focus. My job is to come in here and become the goaltender the organization believes I can be _ and that’s to be a No. 1 goaltender. I’m fully prepared to put the work in, and really excited to start doing it.”
The Flyers (16-17-3), four points out of a playoff spot, are riding their first three-game winning streak of the season. Toronto (20-12-4), one of the NHL surprise teams, also had has won three in a row, and the Leafs have won both meetings against the Flyers this season.
Former Flyer winger James van Riemsdyk (14 goals), one of the NHL’s leading scorers earlier in the year, is in a 10-game goal-scoring drought for Toronto, which is on a 5-0-2 run.

Yes, a new-look lineup would be great if they had the players to do it with. But they didn't get any of the 'top' players available and don't think I would have let Couturier go to do any of them, anyway. PhillySubsMac
intheknow: as an FYI, Reemer is back to normal. 10 game goaless streak and -6. O and in the coaches doghouse, where he was when he got traded. So, theres that. frstrm
I'm glad to see Rosehill playing so that Voracek and Simmonds don't have to fight and sit in the box and then we really have no offense out there. burholme
MichaelZoe>>How is the change in the lottery and another team better fortune to have high draft picks Mr. Snider fault? What the organization needs to be faulted for is their lack of drafting and development with goalies and defensemen. But I love there compete level over several generations of players. this years lottery is still fixated No team can drop more than one spot in the draft order. The odds of winning:30th place: 25.0%-
29th place: 18.8%-28th place: 14.2%-27th place: 10.7%-26th place: 8.1%

srcdaddy1216: Hate to break it to ya, but the NHL draft has changed. FInished low/last doesn't guarantee the top pick. ALL of the teams are in on the chance now, not just the bottom 5. Just our luck. The year we implode and the Pens will end up with the #1, pick another awesome goalie and win 5 more Cups. Way to go, MR. SNIDER.

I still believe the Flyers have talent, they just started to play up to it. The Flyers didn't have to dismantle the team after this crummy, faux season and they got a potentially franchise goalie for nothing, he's better than Leighton any day. Flyers need two big name D'men and they contend, period. TexasYankee
Tonight's prediction......JVR with a hat trick off of 3 Luke Schenn turnovers. How has Holmgren kept job???????????? intheknow99999- there we go. just what i was looking for. an idiot about to talk about how good JVR is. did you even read the article? he hasn't scored a goal in TEN GAMES. he is exactly the player we traded - he can get hot for a short amount of time and completely disappear for periods of time. and is a liability on defense (minus 4). and like a typical no-nothing fan, you can't see just how solid luke schenn has been because he doesn't have 20 goals. he is the only other d-man on our team and only 1 of 4 with a plus rating. he leads the LEAGUE in hits and is probably up there in blocked shots as well. the guy is a HORSE and he's consistent, unlike your precious diva JVR. teams hate playing against schenn because he buries them at the line and along the boards. go back in your hole and learn the game.
Mason...Calder winner in '09....4/5 years of NHL experience...24-years old...19 shutouts for a below-average Blue Jacket teams.....played Blackhawks/RedWings/Blues two dozen times a year in the Central...and now ready to become dominant again after slumping...AND Paul Holmgren wants to sign him to ONLY ONE YEAR! Go figure. Romus
Well looks like Brzy will start again tonight.... Would of been a good time to let Mason get his FLYERS feet wet on the road. Get hereand start playing giving no time to think about playing. Well that is what I would of done and Lavy Hommer andEd want to makethe playoffs....still dont think theyshould even worry about it bring up more guys from the Phantoms and see what they have and if it is nothing at least we will get a better chance of getting the top pick. GingeROUX: It will take a lot more than couts to get Weber it will take picks and more playersand most likely a lot of Ed's and Comcast money to even get close to getting Weber. Would love to have him but I would not totally give up too many young guys to get him either.

The Ottawa Sens have used mostly an AHL lineup this year and have done well, Flyers can do the same with the injuries. All players at this level should be pretty good hockey players it's all about teamwork. jmanship16
yea im happy they didnt trade coots... so they can use him as currency to pry Weber this summer GingeROUX
Wow! What a powerhouse of scoring those 2 bums will add. FlyersLosersFor38Years- Everyone should be glad that Couturier hasn't been traded. I'm not happy to see him put on a fourth line he needs as much ice time as he can handle for the rest of the year. But all in all, I'm glad the trade deadline didn't lead to a big blowup.
Somehow the absence of defensemen who spend 90% of the game on the ice (between Coburn & Grossman) has not hurt them at all. Maybe for once we are witnessing the lesser guys taking their chance to "step up" which usually is a bunch of hogwash but does happen once in a while. Maybe the chemistry of these big defensemen don't fit the style of the speed forwards.
It's a young crew and a lot better to see them win and kept intact. They already traded their scoring forward for an impact defenseman. You can argue that Luke wasn't the right trade but he's young don't judge the JVR trade yet. They can't afford to give away another young forward for a defenseman. They can figure out how to get another guy this offseason.
Fans are so bad and so intolerant. They obviously did not get offered value for what they were willing to trade so they passed. This club needs to be rebuilt from the bottom up and that includes the goalie and the front office. There is a core of really good players that needs time to develop. Vorachek was a non-factor two months ago and has come into his own just by playing and gaining experience. Leave them alone for a while and hope they make the playoff chase interesting. Even if they make the playoffs, they are weak and let's not forget it. hankhammer2
Well another win for the FLYERS and more lose in the ping pong balls needed to get the 1st overall pick in the upcoming draft or at least a top 3 pick. aWe keep Rusty and other wre we could of gotten some extea draft picks for. Getting Mason should allowLavy to rest Brzy but he most likely won't because he along with Ed and Hommer just want to make the playoffs. Why? So that Ed makes money that is why so theyall can say we need just a player or two to win it all again well guys it isn;'t going to hapen until we have D-men and goalie who can steal games during the season and the playoffs. Making the playoffs this year just screws us ina very deep draft were we could really use the #1 pick or at least the best chance we can to get that pick or a top 3 pick. then use other picks to fill out our AHL club were we can groom our picks to become NHL players. Yes I like to see our boys win but not at this time of the year (just this year) because it is hurting us for the up coming draft. srcdaddy1216
