Flyers' goal: trim penalties

The Flyers are 3-0-1 despite a continual parade to the penalty box in the first four games.

They have been shorthanded 40 minutes and 15 seconds _ or a little over 10 minutes a game. Only Carolina (41:41) and Dallas (43:35) have spent more time shorthanded in the 30-team NHL.

But the Flyers are averaging more shorthanded time per game than ANY NHL team. Carolina and Dallas have played five games, one more than the Flyers.

The penalties “far away from our net are the ones we really need to get rid of,” said defenseman Matt Carle, whose team will play in Ottawa Tuesday night.

Still, the Flyers have points in each of their four games.

“That’s a positive thing to look at, with as many penalties as we’ve taken and how much time we’ve killed off, we’re still managing to win games and get points,” Carle said. “But the last game was the first time it bit us, so it’s something we need to emphasize now and get rid of it.”

In a 3-2 overtime loss to Los Angeles on Saturday _ which was, alternately, a Mike Richards love/boofest _ a tripping penalty to James van Riemsdyk led to Jack Johnson’s game-winning, power-play goal.

The Flyers’ focus at practice Monday in Voorhees was on avoiding senseless penalties.

Coach Peter Laviolette would not say which goalie would start against struggling Ottawa.

Sergei Bobrovsky, who had a superb training camp, said he was ready if called upon. Bobrovsky said he was not discouraged that he hasn’t played yet and that he was “just staying patient and working hard.”

Ilya Bryzgalov has a 1.99 GAA and .927 save percentage.
