Flyers get defensive in draft

POSTED: Sunday, June 24, 2012, 8:44 AM

PITTSBURGH _ Throughout their history, the Flyers have had problems producing quality, home-grown defensemen and goalies.

Maybe that's why they drafted so many of them this weekend, hoping there is strength in numbers and that SOME will blossom.

Out of their seven picks, four were defensemen and one was a goalie.

"We're very happy with the way things turned out," said Chris Pryor, the team's director of hockey operations.

Their No. 1 pick, however, was center Scott Laughton.

"You can never have enough strength up the middle," Pryor said. "Our guys had Scotty rated higher" than some of the marquee defensemen that were available.

The Flyers' PR staff won the Dillman Award, presented to the Eastern Conference's best media-relations unit. It was a well-deserved honor for a group headed by Zack Hill.

Nashville won in the West.

Apparently, their 7th-round pick, Vasiliev, had a shoulder injury that caused him to drop in the draft. I'm left to presume that his arm must have been cut off because he had a colossal drop from being the 16th ranked European skater. Do any of you Philly beat writers have any more information on how serious his shoulder injury was? Was there some other problem that caused him to drop from the first or second round to the seventh?

We didn't used to have goalie problems, but that was decades ago.

Wait to you see Olly Lauridsen in September! He is a home-grown defenseman.

@sklandog, 17 year old Vasiliev is a stay-at-home defenseman with an NHL body, as you mentioned he had a serious shoulder injury , mobility is just ok, with decent overall defensive play. He loves to deliver big hits and block shots. Played in three tournaments for Russia but was scoreless I think with a few penalty minutes.

I rather pick a guy like Vasiliev than Mother or Klotz. If you know what I mean.
