Flyers' contract with Talbot violates CBA

The Flyers will apparently have to restructure the five-year, $9 million contract they gave to free-agent forward Max Talbot on Friday.
According to TSN, the Flyers violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement by reducing Talbot's salary by more than 50 percent between the third and fourth years -- from $2.25 million to $1 million.
There is a slight chance the Flyers will be fined for the oversight.

Good God, I don't think that every move Paul Holmgren has made is great ( see Zherdev) , but some of you are ridiculous. Since taking over for Clarke, the team has been consistently a top tier team since they crashed the year he took over. They've gone to the finals once, and deep into the playoffs every year except for his first year, in which Clarke admitted when he resigned that he "didn't feel up to making the tough decisions anymore". Well, Holmgren has made them, one of which was that the team from 2 years ago was going backwards. Anyone could see that. Who knows how the new guys will work out , but they weren't going anywhere with that team. BTW, there's a reason that Vokoun got paid what he got and Bryzgalov got paid what he got. The market isn't about what just Holmgren is willing to pay, it's what all of the GM's are willing to pay, Bryz's pay scale was established by Phoenix years ago,Vokoun will get his if he continues to play at that level. drbob1- ...deep????????

dumb pick-up anyway, Snider sucks big time. send him to alaska Howard32
Everyone is basing picking up Jagr and Talbot, but this is somewhat of a rebuilding year. Schenn and Coultier could be ready for the NHL this year or next year definitely. So when Jagr is gone, we'll have Giroux, JVR, Schenn, Coulteir, all very young. Too bad we traded Sbisa, we need a younger D since I would bet that Pronger will NOT be back next year.

I am glad the NHL is patterning itself after the NBA- long contracts that you can't ger out of that handicaps you in the future. Can't wait to see Pronger in 5 years or the new goalie in 8 years- on that's right, they will be paid and won't be playing- just like the NBA. Nice job NHL- keep it up! rwolffd12
...yet another blunder on an entire off-season of blunders for Holmer & Co. I hope I'm wrong, but it looks like 2011-12 is going to be just an awful year. Phront_Runner

Yeah, Comcast will pay the fine, by increasing our cable bills! Summerof65
I don't see how this team wins a Stanley Cup. Will be a fight to make the playoffs. If it was up to me I would have signed some other goalie (like vokoun) and had them battle it out with Bob for top spot, other then that would have left the team intact, not had a firesale. neddyflanders
I think the Flyers had to cut out the sick part of their team, and they did that. However the Jagr move was initiated when they knew they'd not have Ville back. The other moves are logical. Basically I see it as, we have to go get one more guy and oops - Buffalo just overpaid for Ville! %&#^@_$! They had to scramble. Knowing their scouts thought Jagr was worth relatively small price, and that Pitt would not get him, it was then decided. These moves were planned I think except for Jagr, which was an organic move based on circumstances. Who cares though? He may add 20 goals on the PP. Run on the 3rd line, leaving us with JVR, Giroux, Briere and these new kids. Frankly to me, it sounds all good. One minus - they lost a good scrapping PK guy, Powe. I did not care if he had one point - he was great on the PK. We need to think hard about who can be the new muck and grind in the corner guy now... Poppys
I would have rather the Flyers signed Vokoun for 2MM per year and still make all the moves they made. WIthout extra BRYZ money, they would have been able to steal Stamkos and maybe still have signed Lenio and Jagr. The Smart GM signs VOkoun, who is solid Regular Season goalie like BRYZ. Niether man has proven themselves in Playoffs but VOkun allows you some Finacial Flexibilty. IF they FLyers would have signed VOkoun instead of BRYZ there would have been no way Tampa could have kept Stamkos. The FLyers gutted their payrolls with Richards,Carter,Versteeg,Powe and not signing their UFA's. Tampa has been signing player aftter to player. NO way they would have matched a Max offer under salary cap. Stamkos might be next Jagr or Gretzky. They could have had Gioroux,JVR,Stamkos and Jagr probably as their offense with a very solid Vokoun in the net! IT seems like the obvious move to me, who did they sign after JULY 1st that they couldnt have signed or traded for in season? FLyers stated reason for not offering Stamkos deal was they didnt want to miss out on filling out roster. IN my opinion, BRYz deal was way too much and VOkoun with BOB as backup was intelligent move. That would have given them plenty of flexibility. Bryz is unproven in playoffs Over_Exposed
going to be an interesting hockey season beginning in a few months...the nhl will be in the spotlight with no pro b-ball and at best a shortened pro football season john dorian
Go get Stamkos at any cost. He is a star blaqjaq
