Flyers' contract with Talbot violates CBA

POSTED: Monday, July 4, 2011, 2:02 AM

The Flyers will apparently have to restructure the five-year, $9 million contract they gave to free-agent forward Max Talbot on Friday.

According to TSN, the Flyers violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement by reducing Talbot's salary by more than 50 percent between the third and fourth years -- from $2.25 million to $1 million.

There is a slight chance the Flyers will be fined for the oversight.

Never mind that chump change. What's already hitting the fan is what the Flyers are paying Ilya Bryzgalov versus what the Caps are paying Tomas Vokoun--what's that, a $8.5 million difference in the first year? Ye gad, for that money the Flyers could buy Steven Stamkos and the Tampa Bay team jet. It makes me wonder if the team blundered by fixing their sights solely on Bryzgalov without someone next to Holmgren asking, "I wonder if we can get Vokoun for half the price for five years?"

said it early on that holmgrens blunders would mean we would over pay for a goalie. Vokoun signing proves that we didnt need to pay that much. Now the other half of the equation will be whether Bryz can shed his weak playoff tag and do some good for this team. If not Holmgren should be fired for destroying this team

I'm waiting to see what the financial experts in the front office do about this situation. If there was an actual purpose or a big mistake. Maybe it was done knowing the consequences as a cost of doing business. We see it all the time in big business deals. Maybe the ends justify the means.

From Pittsburgh, with love....:) Jagr used Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins to get better offers, Jagr proceeded to spit in all of their faces. Not only did he use the Penguins, he gave the entire organization and fanbase the middle finger by signing with the Flyers. The F-ing Flyers! http://bleacherreport.com/articles/756464-jaromir-jagr-the-pittsburgh-penguins-and-my-ex-girlfriend

This flyers season has a similar feeling to that of 2006. Remember, the Zhitnik year?

The Collective Bargaining Agreement is very complicated, and some good GMs have been embarrassed by its technicalities. Remember that the BlackHawks recently dismissed Dale Tallon for not mailing out qualifying offers in time to a number of free agents. Even though Tallon took the Hawks from 65 points his first year to 104 in 2009. In addition to Talbot's contract, I think Homer also made a mistake in Pronger's negotiations, not realizing that it would be treated as an over-35 contract, applicable against the cap under essentially all circumstances. As New York Post Flyer-hater Larry Brooks put it: Flyers saved from own stupidity: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/more_sports/item_PkWOfjKFeM7hSglkLsTIOL;jsessionid=5653BE6B89F04D5658B9D37DBFEB1838

As King Obama would say, "just a minor bump in the road"!! He'll be signed.

When your embarrassment of a team hasnt won a cup in 37 years you need a winner like Talbot. Watching the blundering Flyer ownership bumble around, running into each other like morons is a disgrace. Talbot and Jagr have more stanley cups than the entire flyers team. Youd think theyd be able to get the signing right. Especially when you just wasted 3 times as much money on a goalie as you need to. Have fun clawing for 9th place.

So let's see, Flyers didn't get Stamkos, but they did sign Jagr (39), Lilja (35), and a 4th line center, somehow that does not seem like a good thing. C'mon Homer, work on that offer sheet to Stamkos, at least try already.

Whoever is saying to sign Stamkos is out of their mind. The Flyers do not have enough cap space to sign him and get a few others sign. Rosters would be short and no team can play 82 games with 3 or 4 men short of a full roster. Good luck with your fantasy team.

That's because everyone in LA has a smart phone with talk-to-text feature. I think it's required by a style law.
