Sean Couturier, expected to be the Flyers’ third-line center, agreed to a two-year contract extension Saturday that will pay him a total of $3.5 million _ a $1.75 million cap hit per season.

Couturier, 20, could have become a restricted free agent after the 2013-14 season.

After a solid rookie year (13 goals, 27 points, plus-18 rating) Couturier went through a sophomore slump in 2013, when he had just four goals, 15 points and a minus-8 rating in 46 games. Prior to joining the Flyers after the lockout ended, he had 28 points in 31 games with the AHL Adirondack Phantoms last season.

The Flyers might next set their sights on locking up forwards Brayden Schenn and Matt Read. After the 2013-14 season, Schenn can become a restricted free agent (the Flyers would have the chance to match another team’s offer) and Read can become an unrestricted free agent.
