Fan: Boycott opener if NHL returns

POSTED: Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 12:10 PM

A Flyers season-ticket holder wants fans to boycott the home opener if the NHL ever returns from its labor war.

"Whether it's this year or next year, the first game back should be in an empty Wells Fargo Center," said Bill O'Toole.

He said it would serve as "a protest to what the league and the players have put us through. It would be a national story and a fitting 'final word' put on the debacle by the fans, the ones who write the checks for the billions of dollars these two sides can't seem to divide."

O'Toole claimed he has received lots of support from other season-ticket holders on his idea, and he is hopeful it spreads around the league.

The Flyers would lose big time on concessions and parking, so a boycott would have some impact, even if most of the tix are paid for in advance.

Then it makes more sense to take public transit to the game and not buy anything while you're there. They've already got the ticket revenue.

Flyers fans don't have the balls to do that.

I'd prefer to phrase it as they don't have the lack of common sense to cut off their noses to spit their faces.

Although if they did, imagine the picture on the TV screen as the producers desperately try to come up with camera angles that do not show an empty arena, and the announcers tactfully avoiding mentioning it. Maybe they'd play a sound track of crowd noise.

I suppose they could always cite "technical difficulties" and not televise the game at all. But no, they'd lose the ad money.

Great idea. In fact start the boycott now of all NHL merchandise. I mean it's kind of ridiculous we grown men want to idolize these greedy jocks and parade around with named jerseys when they don't give two flips for anybody but themselves and their portfolios.

Why boycott one game? What does it accomplish? I've vowed to boycott until Bettman is out.

As a long time season ticket holder, now dealing with the 2nd work stoppage in that timeframe, I'm in 100% for 5 games!!!

I could care less what anyone else does.....sure, I will not go to the first game, but I will definitely be watching it on tv. The Phillies stink and will for years to come thanks to RAJ. The Eagles stink and will for years to come thanks to Fat Andy. I miss the Flyers and can't wait for them to start playing again.

Mike's right - boycott one game? Does nothing. I still don't blame the players nearly as much as the owners and
bettman. Whatever...I still have the LPGA to cheer for.

Why just one game? Boycott professional sports indefinitely. Who needs the rich cry babies? Not me.

I did him one better. I no longer buy tickets, merchandise, online viewing.....essentially anything.

They made their feelings perfectly clear to me the first time that they don't care for the source of their revenue. I didn't wait for the second time around and certainly not a third.

    Pointy-ended metal fastener them.

I am ready to boycott a season, just like the owners are doing to us. Count me in, its gotta be a grass roots movement. mrh1955@comcast.net

Not going to boycott a regular season Flyer game. I'll wait for the playoffs when they typically get bounced by a lower seated team.

Wait a minute. Aren't you the guy who keeps posting that he doesn't like hockey? Doesn't care about hockey?

Is that the best a Temple educated man can do?

Great idea, but why stop at one game. I have gone to my last NHL game!
