Courting season for Parise

POSTED: Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 9:45 AM
Devils forward Zach Parise scored 31 goals and tallied 38 assists in 82 games last regular season. (Matt Slocum/AP)

The Flyers will be among numerous teams interested in talking with New Jersey star left winger Zach Parise when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Understandably, Parise was in no mood to address his status after the Kings won the Stanley Cup by blasting his Devils, 6-1, on Monday.

“I’m not talking about that,” he told reporters in Los Angeles.

Parise had just one goal in the Finals; the Devils want to re-sign him.

“I think Zach is a big thing the organization has to take care of first, no doubt about that,” goaltender Marty Brodeur said. “They need to try to lock him in and lure him into staying. He’s a franchise player and a guy the fans love. As a captain, he’s a great leader and he did a great job first year as a captain to bring a team counted out early in the season to what we accomplished.”

Former Flyer Simon Gagne was one of the first Kings to skate around the ice with the Stanley Cup. It was a greatest snapshot of his underrated career.

A few minutes later, in the sweetest moment of their careers, Mike Richards handed the Cup to his best friend, Jeff Carter.

Richards on the Flyers organization: "They taught me how to be a winner."

He then said this about the Kings: “This is the closest team I've ever been a part of."

They have a pretty good goalie. What they need is someone in front of that can play Defense. It was their crappy play of the D men that cost them the Cup.

Pretty good goalie...??? What planet do you live on? Jonathan Quick is the prototype of a "good goalie". He is the reason LA won the Stanley Cup.

@Dogman5, do you actually watch hockey? The Flyers need forwards that can defend, and protect the puck. It is not the defensemen, it is not the goaltender.

Ilya Bryzgalov: game 4 versus New Jersey, total shots 42.

Johnathan Quick: games 1,5, and 6, COMBINED, shots 54.

Having said that, Parise would be a waste of money for the Flyers, unless they could somehow get rid of Briere first.

LOL According to the great Hexy Quick is not a great goalie, it's the LA defense that won the Cup.
That's why Quick won the Conn Smythe and posted the lowest GAA in the modern era 1.41, he also had the highest save percentage .946.

Get rid of Briere? ROTFL Briere has 109 points in 108 playoff games, putting him on an elite list of NHL players that have averaged over a point a game in over 100 playoff games. The list included such all time greats as Guy Lafleur and Joe Sakic. The one we need to get rid of is Hexy.

You assume that one player wins games. That is not how hockey works. Quick is a great goaltender. He is not the sole reason that the LA Kings won 16 playoff games. He let in several weak goals in the playoffs. Goals that would be unacceptable if he played for the Flyers. See the Derek Morris goal from centre ice. Watch Parise's goal in game 5. See Henrique's short-side game winner in game 4.

You just don't understand the details of the game. It's a shame for someone who spends so much time talking about it. Quick faced 232 total shots in the last 2 rounds of the playoffs. The Flyers allowed 342 in their 2 rounds. That stat does not represent the quality of goaltending, it is the commitment to team defence. Although, you probably believe that Quick was so good that the teams just decided to not shoot.

"Goals that would be unacceptable if he played for the Flyers." LOL After all the excuses you made for Leaky letting in dozens of softees, I can't stop laughing. Flyers' management (and every other team in the league) would love to have Quick in their net.

"Henrique's short-side game winner in game 4." ROTFL
That was a well-placed, unstoppable shot that even Jacques Plante couldn't have saved.

"You just don't understand the details of the game."
ROTFL Aren't you the guy who posted that the Kings forwards were back-checking so well? If that's true, how did Henrique get in all alone to shoot on Quick?

You just don't understand how important Quick was to LA: Quick has been the Kings' best player and backbone all season, frequently carrying them through long stretches of mediocre skating and shooting. His stellar effort was the main reason the Kings were even close to playoff position in late February, when the lowest-scoring team at the time finally awoke its slumbering offense by trading for power forward Jeff Carter, who scored two goals in the finale.

Here's a vid of your hero in action. Watch him choke the Cup away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5aLHImCKDc

Let's see if I can remember the excuse you made for him. "It was the same goal that Ryan Miller gave up to Crosby." LOLOLOLOLOL

You are still talking about Leighton, huh. The fact that you think Leighton let in "dozens" of weak goals, proves the lack of attention you pay. He let in 91 goals in the 2010 season. You are saying that, at minimum, 24 of those were weak. How many did he let in from centre ice? Fewer than Quick, I bet.

You also don't understand the point of defensive pressure. Goaltenders make significantly less saves on odd-man rushes. So, when you look at those clips I posted, and you say that they are scoring goals on odd-man advantages...you are proving MY point. Bryzgalov faced more odd-man rushes in 2 games versus Pittsburgh, than Quick faced in the entire Cup run. More pressure=fewer chances=fewer goals=fewer saves=more victories.

I see you brought up irrelevant information again. You started with Leighton, then you moved on to the regular season for Quick. What are you trying to say? Do you ever make a point? Focus your thoughts, focus an opinion, then add something to a conversation. I am aware that Quick is a good goaltender. Quick did not win many games single-handedly, outside of the Vancouver series. He was rarely pressured. Facing less than 20 shots a game, and no odd-man rushes...that is because of the team in front of him played very well. Choosing an MVP was difficult on LA because they are a completely balanced team.

Again, I said that Leighton let in the same goal as Miller. Quick, Smith, Holtby were all stars in this year's playoffs...and all have let goals in from centre ice in the past 2 seasons. Do you get what I am saying? All goaltenders let in goals. All goalies let in bad goals. You just simply believe that other goalies let in bad goals, but the Flyers are all bad goalies. You would complain about George Hainsworth if he played in Philly.

Yes, to multiple attractive models from LA. With the Stanley Cup looking on. Laughing about why they were ever upset about getting moved out of the inept Flyers organization.

If anyone thinks Parise is worth $8mil per year I have to wonder if they ever watched him play.
