TAMPA _ Defenseman Braydon Coburn and the Flyers agreed to a four-year contract extension Wednesday that will pay him $18 million, a $4.5 million yearly cap hit.
He currently has a $3.2 million cap hit.
Coburn, 26, could have been an unrestricted free agent after this season.
Coburn's wife, Nadine, gave birth to a daughter, Rory, in October.
"I hit the jackpot," Coburn said of recent developments.
In 14 games this season, Coburn has three assists and is plus-1. He is the longest-tenured Flyer on the roster.

Chris Pronger, who has missed six games with an eye injury, will be in the lineup Wednesday night in Tampa.
The Flyers have only six defensemen on the trip. Erik Gustafsson, who was plus-6 in his last game against Columbus, did not make the trip because he is bothered by an apparent wrist injury.
Gustafsson's injury is not serious, and there is a chance he could play later in the trip, a team source said.
Later in the week, Gustafsson, Brayden Schenn and Blair Betts will join the Flyers in Naples to take part in their bonding trip.
In tonight's game, the defensive pairings figure to look like this: Pronger-Matt Carle; Coburn-Kimmo Timonen; Andreas Lilja-Andrej Meszaros.

Tonight's 7:30 p.m. game matches two of the NHL's best players, Claude Giroux (19 points, nine goals) and the Lightning's Steven Stamkos (15 points, 10 goals).
Tampa will be without key defensemen Victor Hedman and Mattias Ohlund. Both are injured..

absolutely TERRIBLE contract!!!! This will be like a lead weight on the cap for the next 4 years. This guy scores 36 points in 07-08 and gets a ridiculous contract that he hasn't lived up to and we go and give him a raise. The CBA is up at the end of the year unless the players have some unheard of leverage and the Cap goes way up next year we're skrewed giving Bigbird a guy who was out scored by Sean Odonnel last year a 4.5 million dollar cap hit. THIS IS HORRIBLE NEWS!!! Njtod10
Do you watch hockey? Who cares how many points he has?? A top 4 NHL Defenseman gets paid $4m/year, it was a no brainer to lock Coburn up for 4 years. Glad they got it done and out of the way. I actually saw a report on TSN that it was $18m for 5 years which would be a great deal for the Flyers, but really it's a solid deal either way. sla6yer
um yeah he's a turnover machine and is a master of hitting the guy right infront of him with his pointshot hence the 2 goals in the last two years. this is a terrible contract. 18 million for 5 years makes more sense. he should not be making north or 4 million for what he brings to the table, I don't care what you say, he's not responsible with the puck. Lets see how many times he blindly sends the puck up the boards to the other teams pointman during tonights game. Njtod10
plus you just locked 20 million into 4 defenseman, thats crazy, there is one other team in the league paying 3 defenseman over 4 million. Toronto is the only other team paying 3 d-men that much. And JM Liles is on the last year of his deal. Njtod10
This is a pretty good contract, pegged at just under his market value. If you take the time to look at recent signings of 26/27 year old second pairing D-men you will agree. (my guess is that those who oppose the signing will simply not do their homework before flamming here). Momus
my god the koolaid is sweet this afternoon, have you watch Coburn play at all this year?????? Njtod10
Momus, do youself a favor and check Capgeek and see what other defenseman are making, this isn't a good deal. The market was ridiculous this year because of the CBA and the cap floor having to be met by a bunch of bottom feeders, they should have waited and saw what he was worth at the end of the season when the "hopefully" new CBA rules are out there. Njtod10
The Market:
James Wisniewski 6 yrs, 5.5M/yr after playing on 2nd pairing
Joni Pitkanen 3 yrs, 4.5M/yr after playing on 2nd/3rd pairing
Christian Ehrhoff 10 yrs, 4M/yr after playing on 3rd pairing
Trevor Daley 6 yrs, 3.3M/yr after playing on 3rd pairing
Andy Green 4 yrs, 3M/yr after playing on 3rd pairing
Ian White 2 yrs, 2.9M/yr after playing on 3rd pairing Momus
Yeah, uhhh, let's wait and hope. Momus
He is still growing as a player, defensemen are at a premium. Was it a steal? No but their top 2 defensmen are in the twilight and they needed to do this. Sidewinder7
we will trade him anyway, who cares. fman727
Coburn is a much improved defenseman since a few years ago. It was a great move getting him signed up again. If anyone watches hockey and KNOWS even a little bit about the game they realize that Coburn is an important piece of this team. And who said he has to score? He plays defense and he does it very well. erniebanks14
Getting Walker in the Gagne trade and signing Lilja were HORRIBLE. Giving Bartulius a contract was horrible. MichaelZoe
You guys that think this is a good deal do not watch him in front of his net. The Flyers over paid for his Sub Par services. Wow I would have let cream puff walk. most of those other contract being referred to are ok teams that have the salary room that have over paid to get that one defenseman to play there. Coburn is like # 4 on our team maybe somewhere else he would be a #2. ONLYinPhilly
you guys need to stop slurping the koolaid, your tongues are turning orange, Erhoff and Wisniewski actually deserved their raises, the rest of the people on that list are making less than him, this is a terrible deal I don't care what you so called zombie loyalist think.
