Carcillo provides goal, comic relief in win
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
Danny Briere provided the theatre, but Dan Carcillo supplied the comic relief in the Flyers' 6-2 pounding of the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday at the Wachovia Center.
Briere, the 32-year-old forward, scored a pair of goals to reach the 500-point mark in his career, triggering a standing ovation.
Carcillo lost a third-period fight to Jamal Mayers, but gleefully signaled to the pumped-up crowd as he went to the penalty box.
It was his second-period goal, however, that had the crowd buzzing.
Carcillo, skating from the left circle to the right post, made it 3-0 with a picturesque goal midway through the middle period.
The left winger, known more for his fists than his goals, deked defenseman Luke Schenn to the ice, then beat goalie Jonas Gustavsson with a backhander before celebrating, Briere-like, by going low to the ice and starting an exaggerated fist pump. He skated to Flyers’ bench and exchanged high fives, then went near the visitors’ bench and pretended he was high-fiving the Leafs.
“Well I’ve actually done that before in L.A. in my rookie year," said a laughing Carcillo, referring to his goal, not the mocking of the Leafs. "Is it easy to remember? Like déjà vu.”
After the game, a Toronto reporter asked Leafs defenseman Ian White the following: What do you think of Dan Carcillo and the antics? Up in the media row they were calling him a poor man’s Sean Avery. What was the reaction from your bench?
“What can you do? He scored a nice goal and got a fight, you know people like to see that from a fan’s perspective, I’m sure," White said. "I mean, that’s a little unsportsmanlike, but what can you say; he scored a goal and got in a fight.”
Surprisingly, Carcillo leads Flyers forwards with a plus-seven rating.
“He’s been really effective, and he has stayed out of the box," coach Peter Laviolette said. "Danny hasn’t done a lot of things that would put him in the box. He’s been in control of his game and has got some skill, and he can play physical. He’s the type of guy that can wear it on his sleeve. He was good tonight. Really good.”
Notes. Michael Leighton (30 saves) continued his solid goaltending and is now 5-0-1....Rookie James van Riemsdyk had a goal and an assist, giving him two points in consecutive games for the first time in his career....Chris Pronger (three assists) had his first three-point game as a Flyer.....Darroll Powe led the Flyers with four hits.....There were 80 penalty minutes and four fights.....Mike Richards had his ninth power-play goal; the Flyers had three power-play goals for the first time since Dec. 8....Thursday comes a much stiffer test _ on the road at Pittsburgh, a team that is 3-0 against the Flyers this season.

First off he didn't lose the fight...The Mutt he fought Jamal Mayers has 1 goal and 4 assists. Carcillo has 4 goals and 5 assists. Mayers belongs in another profession..he really lacks talent. CommonSense4Philly

He's on his way to score 10 goals this year. Just think of what Carcillio could do in the Playoffs? Maybe get in fight and give the momentum to the other team? Why engage Woody Acton? No respect... frafla- Carcillo leads Flyers forwards in +/- because he is in the box when the other teams are scoring. But besides that, yes, didnt like him when he came over, mostly because i like Upshall so much, but now, when he isnt taking penalties, im starting to come around on him. Inchon
Carcillo got under the Leafs skin & pushed their buttons all night long. He did an amazing job at agitating & not reacting. He let the Leafs react & take all the penalties. Great job. Oh, yeah...sweet goal too! america
Frafla, nobody would have said anything about Carcillo pounding Max Talbot and giving the Pens momentum if Ed olcyzk didnt make that moronic statement. The Building was never louder after that fight. It was a garbage couple of goals Biron gave up after that. If a team got momentum every time a player got beat up Cote would play every night Honestabe71

Honestabe's got it right. That "momentum changing fight" was nonsense. Seriously, Carcillo was forcefeeding Talbot knuckle sandwiches. That didn't turn the game around in favor of the Pens. Ed Olcyzk's a dope. dave-tx- Inchon, your hockey knowledge is pathetic. If another team scores when on the power play, it doesn't effect your +/- rating, so your logic on Carcillo in box helping this statistic is totally off. bsgratch
You know, I am sick of Carcillo, he is really hurting this team to no end and I cannot stand that trade last year to bring this cancer here. On the surface you say he had a good game last night with a great goal, but all the other stuff is killing this team. The Flyers have the most penalties in the league and its mostly due to reputation more than reality, and it is jerk's like Carcillo that give the Flyers a bad reputation. Combine all the penalties with a mediocre PK and you can see why this team cannot beat anyone good. Carcillo, listen up, you have 4 goals this year, thats it 4 goals!, and your team is 1 game over .500 and currently not in the playoffs. Do your job, play disciplined and shut-up already. You are a plague to this team and you would be riding the zamboni if I were coaching you. jdeang- Jdeang: Carcillo a cancer for this team? The guy has the best +/- of all the Flyer forwards, draws nearly as many penalties as he takes, plays hard every shift, intimidates/distracts the other teams, wins battles on the boards, etc. There is a lot more to hockey than scoring goals, and Carcillo brings that "lot more." I hope the whole team gets his "cancer"-- we then may actually win the Cup. Go Flyers!
DaCa needs to keep the 'stache, it helps him improve his stick handling abilities. Romus
yahmpy - thank you for saying this. It constantly baffles me that so many people dont understand the Upshall trade and what a salary cap is, and how that factored into the trade. jdeang - read that line "Surprisingly, Carcillo leads Flyers forwards with a plus-seven rating.", Hes NOT hurting this team. MdeanL
Ummm, Olcyzk wasn'the only person that thought Carcillo dropping the gloves was a terrible idea. Granted I hate Eddie O, but I was thinking the exact same thing. When will your filthy organization learn that gonery will not bring you a cup? If you're going to be goons, at least do it at the right time. 1975goons- Hey Carcillo: Shhhhh!
Carbomb has been great this year, but you have to wonder when the other shoe is gonna fall. Gloating after a draw? Come on man. As long as he's not taking stupid minors and playing hard I'm cool with him though. BS, you're the idiot. He was saying that him being in the box when the other team scores is allowing him to maintain a high +/-, because when the other team scores when in he's in the box, it doesn't affect his rating. ItsOnLikeDK
MdeanL: Flyer fan WRONG again. Obviously, you and Holmgrem know about the same when it comes to the Cap. They traded Upshall ($1.2 mil) for a guy making just under $1 million. That does NOTHING for our cap situation. Regardless of how well Upshall is doing now (14 goals, plus 7), we could have dumped him for a pick and saved the salary. Holmgrem also rewarded Randy Jones with a big contract, then sent him to the Kings and we're still paying a portion of it (I also won't mention that Jones is playing very well for the Kings). So, there is more going on here...lack of cap management, the goons brought in and the failure to develop our draft picks and young players. MichaelZoe

Michael Zoe. You are in love with Scottie Upshall. They traded carcillo for cap money. Although it was minimal it allowed the Flyers to call up some guy named Giroux who was the Flyers leading scorer in the first round. So trading Upshall allowed the Flyers to have Carcillo and Giroux play at the same time. Take that poster down he plays for Pheonix now Honestabe71
Ed Olczk wasn't the only who said Carcillo's fight with Talbot gave them the momentum. Keith Jones said it too. And they were both dead wrong. Talent wins, fights don't. Biron choked, and the team caved around him when they realized it was hopeless. Danno
It wasn't Upshall's salary for Carcillo's salary 1 for 1. Upshall's salary was a piece moved to fit a portion of Briere's back in. Danno
