Carcillo demoted to 4th line
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
The early returns on the Daniel Carcillo-Scottie Upshall trade are not good.
Far from it.
Carcillo's acquisition freed cap space so the Flyers wouldn't have to yo-yo rookie sensation Claude Giroux to the minors. That's been the best part about the deal. Carcillo has three assists and no goals in 13 games and does not supply the energy that made Upshall such a fan favorite.
In the last two games, Carcillo has spent most of his time on the fourth line.
GM Paul Holmgren has made several terrific deals in the last two years, and maybe one day this trade _ which also saw the Flyers give a No. 2 pick in 2011 _ will look like a positive.
Maybe.
But right now, it's a head-scratcher.

I'm not particularly worried about the cap for next year. Danny Syvret will take Jones' place on the blue line next year for the league minimum and Jones will get another $2.5 somewhere else, Knuble's contract will probably not be renewed in favor of keeping Coburn and probably Lupul (who won't get much more than the $2Mish he's getting right now). Hartnell has acutally lived up to his $4.5M this year, Carter and Richards will be considered underpaid in a couple years and Gagne, Timmonen, and Carle are all making about what they are worth. Briere, makes too much, but at least he earns his contract more than Gomez or Drury up in NY; the guy is almost a point-per-game player, even with his injuries this year, and those are very rare in the NHL. He'll waive the no-trade at some point if he gets enough pressure, but it's not time yet. Ckott- The Flyers now have three big guns--Carcillo, Cote, and Asham to deal with the likes of the Rangers, Devils, and Pens who have good-sized forwards. We saw all three duke it out with the Isles the other night. I hate to see Holmgren give away draft picks but the Flyers always manage to find pretty decent free agents to sign.
Coburn is already signed for next year - no raise required. The Flyers also have a lot of prospects and young players on the roster at this point, so I am not as concerned about the trading of picks. They actually will need to make some tough decisions because of who is in the pipeline. That said, I don't like Carcillo. I really enjoyed Upshall and the energy he brought every game. He also really stepped up his game at the end of last year and in the playoffs. Luckily having Gagne and Giroux for this years playoffs will be a plus. I'd be happy to dump Cote and Carcillo and keep Asham as our tough guy - he can at least play. However both are signed for next year already (Asham is not). mikemcnhl
