The early returns on the Daniel Carcillo-Scottie Upshall trade are not good.

    Far from it.

Carcillo's acquisition freed cap space so the Flyers wouldn't have to yo-yo rookie sensation Claude Giroux to the minors. That's been the best part about the deal. Carcillo has three assists and no goals in 13 games and does not supply the energy that made Upshall such a fan favorite.

In the last two games, Carcillo has spent most of his time on the fourth line.

GM Paul Holmgren has made several terrific deals in the last two years, and maybe one day this trade _ which also saw the Flyers give a No. 2 pick in 2011 _ will look like a positive.

    Maybe.

    But right now, it's a head-scratcher.

Settle down everyone! Nobody liked throwing in a 2nd round pk here- but You guys all act like Upshall was Guy Lafleur. Relax- he was a fun-to-watch good skater who is a 10-12 goal a year guy. This Flyers team has so many scorers it's ridiculous. This deal was made because Briere's 6.5 mil had to fit. So would you rather have Briere and Carcillo or Upshall and Nodl?

I miss Upshall like everyone else, I wish there was some way they could have kept him and I hate seeing him with the Coyotes but unfortunatly he was the most logical to go. I think in time Carcillo will see the opportunity that has been handed and take advantage of it and if he doesn't he needs to become a full time member of the Phantoms with no return. This is a chance of a lifetime for him!!! I think it is time for Briere to step up and earn his 6.5 million or do the Flyers a favor and waive his no trade clause. He says he wants to help this team win, well he is a Flyer and he needs to start playing like a Flyer, they should accept nothing less from him. And I really like Biron but Holmgren really needs to look to improve his goaltending in the offseason.

Great point GNIKGNARLY, you have to look at that deal as gaining briere and the ability to add giroux to the lineup on a permanent basis. And Giroux has been outstanding. Carcillo is a 4th line guy at best and should be limited to minimul ice time with cote as the playoffs approach. I would move asham or powe up since they seem to bring a bit more energy and skill to the team, even if they have to play out of position. As for the goaltending, Biron needs to play a complete season at this level before I am sold on him. I think they need help in that position but it will not come cheap which could be a problem for the flyers down the road. Should be an interesting offseason with the cap supposed to go down after this year.

Stevens is more at fault here than Holmgren. Why is he still playing Cote? Carcillo on Richards' wing? I think he's lost in his own mind right now. Write Powe, Carcillo, and Asham in permanent marker as the 4th line and don't think about it for the rest of the year. Give a talented player like Nodl an opportunity on a scoring line.

Goes to show energy and PIM aren't equivalent. Upshall was no Guy LeFleur, but his energy was seen in good forechecking and some scoring chances. Carcillo seems to be the poster boy for staged fights that haven't done much for the Flyers.

it was to keep giroux up as well.. who everyone is raving about. holmgren has done great deals in the past. the upshall one isnt the best..but maybe that late 2nd pick which is basically an early third is one of those "you owe us one"

getting to keep Giroux on full-time, and getting Briere back was worth it. That being said...Carcillo is useless, and should have never been anywhere but on the 4th line

carcillo blows...flat out, and is not even a good fighter. Upshall was OK, but throwing in a 2cnd round pick is tough to swallow. We had to do all that just to keep Giroux up w/ the big team. Different time in todays NHL

It was a trade he had to make; I'm sure he did the best he could with the numbers he had. If a lot of these clowns are still around next season, then I'll be disappointed.

You guys all forget that Upshall was most likely not going to be resigned at the end of the year.
