Bryz redeems himself

CALGARY, Alberta _ The Flyers won a shootout on Saturday night. Honest.

Ilya Bryzgalov allowed two early goals, but redeemed himself and helped the Flyers overcome a three-goal deficit and stun Calgary, 5-4, in a shootout at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Bryzgalov stopped four of five shots in the shootout.

“This will do a lot for his confidence,” goalie coach Jeff Reese said.

Bryzgalov, who had stopped just three of 10 shots in earlier shootouts this season, refused to talk to the media for the second straight game.

Matt Read scored the game-winner in the shootout. Claude Giroux kept the shootout alive with a goal on the Flyers’ third shootout shot.

The Flyers are now 2-5 in shootouts this season and 21-39 in the franchise’s history.

Scott Hartnell scored his 29th and 30th goals to spark the Flyers, who trailed 3-0 before scoring two goals (Jakub Voracek, Braydon Coburn) in the final 4:13 of the second period.

“It was a great win and a great comeback,” Read said.

"If we're not down by more than three or four goals, it's no problem. We can come back,” Jaromir Jagr said. “There’s no panic.”

Even when the Flyers faced a 3-0 deficit, Jagr said, he was confident.

“Maybe the score (looked bad), but not the scoring chances and shots,” Jagr said. “We’re down 3-0, but the shots are 16-5. We just had to play the same way.”

It was the Flyers' second win in three games on the road trip, which concludes Tuesday in San Jose. In the other victory, they also rallied dramatically and outlasted Winnipeg in OT, 5-4.

Breakaways. Recently acquired Pavel Kubina blocked five shots....Wayne Simmonds and Danny Briere each had five shots.....The Flyers fired 82 shots (45 on goal), while Calgary managed 54 (21 on goal).....Hartnell's 30 goals equal a career high.
