Bryz limping; has fracture in foot

POSTED: Monday, March 26, 2012, 11:10 PM

If Ilya Bryzgalov’s injured foot continues to bother him, are you comfortable with Sergei Bobrovsky as the Flyers’ goalie?
Yes. Bob has shown he can make all the plays.
No. Bob hasn’t proven he can win the big games.

UPDATE: The Flyers announced Tuesday that Bryzgalov had a chip fracture in his right foot and would not play Thursday. He is listed as day to day, which means they don't think the injury is serious. But one wonders if the injury will throw off his timing.

* * *

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, through a team spokesman, said goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was fine after the team’s 5-3 loss to lowly Tampa Bay on Monday at the Wells Fargo Center.

Bryzgalov’s limp said otherwise.

Bryzgalov, who has become the Flyers’ meal ticket, limped noticeably around the locker room after the game and apparently had X-rays.

It was Bryzgalov’s 19th start in 20 games, and coach Peter Laviolette has said he wants to get Sergei Bobrovsky some action.

Because of Bryzgalov’s potential injury _ he may have gotten hit on the leg during warm-ups Monday _ the Flyers figure to err on the side of caution and use Bob on Thursday in Toronto.

The Flyers do not permit their players to talk about injuries. Holmgren is the only one who  addresses injuries, and he goes to extremes to avoid talking about them.

Bryzgalov was asked if he needs a breather.

"I just an employee here," he said before limping away. "Whatever the coach decides, I going to do it."

Bryzgalov’s streak of allowing two goals or fewer ended at 11 games. It was the Flyers’ longest streak since the iconic Bernie Parent also had an 11-gamer in 1974-75.

Classy Carle. Defenseman Matt Carle's turnover led to a late goal that proved to be the game-winner on Monday.

"Obviously it's gut-wrenching to have that happen, and I just want to apologize to my teammates and all the fans and everybody that paid for a ticket to come to the game tonight," Carle said. "It's hard to swallow right now, especially in a playoff race and where we are in the standings. Those are two huge points that we needed."

Is there a more stand-up athlete in Philly sports than Carle?

Stunning stats. The Flyers had 81 shot attempts; Tampa had 29.

The Flyers put 38 shots on net, had 25 blocked and 18 that missed.

* * *

Cousins in fold. The Flyers agreed to terms with 5-10, 169-pound center Nick Cousins to an entry-level contract.

Cousins, 18, starred in the OHL this season, collecting 35 goals and 88 points in 65 games for his junior team.

Cousins was selected in the third round (68th overall) of the 2011 draft. He was chosen with a pick acquired in the deal that sent Jeff Carter to Columbus.

Breakaways. Scott Hartnell took over the NHL lead with his 16th PP goal....Zac Rinaldo had six hits...Kimmo Timonen, who notched his 400th career assist, is listed as day to day with an upper-body injury.....Danny Briere was minus-3 and was in the penalty box for another Tampa goal.....Comeback of the night: Zack Hill, the affable Flyers PR director, returned to duty after being hospitalized for two days with a blood infection in his leg.....The Flyers will not practice again until Wednesday, in Voorhees.

Good idea to rest him and give Bob some starts so in case they need him for the playoffs he's not too far out of action.

I don't get this no practice stuff. The way they played that game it looks like they need more practice.

Big of Carle to take the blame but even though he cost us at least a point with that late goal the whole team lacked D tonight. No biggie. Shake it off and move on, cuz it's not like we're going to pass the Pens anyway. I only hope the Rags can stay on top. Go Flyers! Bryz, rest whatever body part is causing your limp cuz we need you man.

The Flyers have not played well in the past month. They have the toughest schedule of any team in the Eastern conference, to finish out the season. They have already clinched a playoff spot, and their position can not drastically change. They need to get their game in order. So many odd-man rushes and breakaways against...every game. I am surprised that it is Bryzgalov's leg that is injured, and that his back isn't sore from carrying this team.

For some reason the Flyers do not play well against TB going back to last season. This was more like the Norfolk Admirals beating the Flyers last night. Very disappointing loss.

Did you winey weiners watch any of the game at all.The Flyers had 90% puck possesion, they outplayed outwork TB all game.Sadly Matt handed TB a Goal his fault no one else.Briere handed them another Goal again his fault for a bad back pass without looking.Empty net,Thats 3 goals that had nothing to do with work ethic for TB they were gifts.None were Byrz's fault. At the other end Roleston was good and lucky ,Puck thru and under his pad hits inside post pops out that type of luck and we got no bounces ,but to say we did not Play well?I think not i like what i saw despite the loss,The Flyers clinched a berth 2 days earlier frankly i was expecting them to look slow and play bad because of the Clinch but just the opposite. Not all lossess are bad there are alot of goods things to bring from last nights game.Jeez Louise

Hexy- I totally disagree. The Flyers have played their best hockey of the year in the past month (especially compared to Jan.-Feb.).It IS a team sport, you know.

Hexy you do realize the Flyers were 8-2 1(OT Loss) so far in March. Over an 82 game season that translates to around 148 points. I would gladly take that winning percentage through the rest of the regular season and playoffs.

I'm suprised it's not his ear that hurts....from pucks whizzing by them all night...That's what an all-offense game will get you...ton of shots, not enough rebounds and few, but quality scoring chances down the other end. Gotta tighten up. Strong effort from Simmonds and a few others, but back check once in a while guys.

Stand up guy or not, that loss could be costly as they all are this time of year. Just can't make those mistakes!

If Flyers sweep Pens and Rangers in the remaining games, they still have a chance at #1. Of course, need to pretty much win all the remaining games and pray a bit.

In all honesty, Bryz's play has masked the excessive amount of crucial zone turnovers over this latest stretch. Carle is a nice player and can do some things, but he's not a 1/2 defender and it is showing. He is playing too many minutes and regularly turns the puck over like he did last night. The Flyers need to, NEED TO, take better care of the puck.

Once again Carle for the loss... Can someone explain to me why he's still around? Time after time his "brilliant heads up play and ability to read the play" has led to goals against or losses. Sick of it.

How is it that TB can score on every third shot they take and we cant even get shots thru to the net most of the time? Scoring 5 goals on 15 shots really shows what kind of (non)defense we have. And by that I mean TEAM defense!

Thanks Gully for the voice of reason...It was one of those games that you knew wasn't going our way despite the dominance...yeah, we committed turnovers but give TB some credit, they have some skilled players and capitalized on every one, it's not like they're just gonna lay down for us...Their keeper stood on his head the entire game...The complainers obviously have never played a sport where these things happen...They'll be fine...

Should have beaten Tampa Bay. No way around that being a bad loss.
