Update: Bryz injured at practice, will start

POSTED: Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 1:10 PM

WINNIPEG -- Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov injured his glove hand while making a save at Tuesday's morning skate, but the Flyers said it wasn't serious and he will still start tonight against the Jets.

Bryzgalov left the ice for X-rays and his hand was red.

General manager Paul Holmgren said the goalie was fine.

Coach Peter Laviolette was initially non-committal when asked if Bryzgalov would still play.

Much has been made of the Flyers' inability to beat the New York Rangers this season.

But it should also be noted that the lowly Winnipeg Jets (nee Atlanta Thrashers) also have their number.

Winnipeg is 3-0 against the Flyers this season, including a pair of wins at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Jets, who have won three straight to climb to No. 9 in the East, will host the Flyers at 7 tonight, starting a swing that will also take Philadelphia to Edmonton, Calgary and San Jose.

"This road trip comes at the right time," center Danny Briere said. "For some reason, we play pretty well on the road."

The Flyers are 18-9-2 away from the WFC.

If Bryzgalov gets the call, he will undoubtedly hear mocking chants of "Illllllllllyaaaaaaaaa!" He heard them during warmups in Winnipeg three months ago.

Bryzgalov is despised here because of negative remarks he made about the city when rumors were swirling that his old team, Phoenix, was going to move to Winnipeg.

When the Flyers played in Winnipeg on Nov. 19, Sergei Bobrovsky was given the call and his team lost, 6-4, despite two goals each from Matt Read and Scott Hartnell.

My two cents? It's time to let Bryzgalov play several games in a row and see if he can get on a roll.

The Jets have beaten the Flyers 9-8, 6-4 and 2-1 in a shootout.

The Flyers' Eric Wellwood may face his brother, Kyle, when the teams meet tonight. It would be the first time they have opposed one another in the NHL.

Peter Laviolette will probably decide between playing Wellwood or Zac Rinaldo.

Worst FA signing in the history of Philly sports! Guy is too soft to be a high level athlete and to boot, is a head case! Great job Holmgren!

I can't wait for the next 9 years of headshaker stories about this whiny oversensitive dbag. The Flyers basically spent $50 million to upgrade their goalie problems from "Legitimate" to "Hey, you in the 4th row there, yeah you. Ever play goalie before? No? Well, no worries. Try this mask on"

The Flyers have changed the three ring circus of last years playoffs with Boucher/Bobrovsky/Leighton at $4/M total to Bryz/Bob at over $10/M total. $6/M more but same results, money not well spent.

What's your point, seanosdad? If you're in favor of a personnel move when it's made, but the move goes south, you're not allowed to express an opinion?

I completely disagree about Leighton being the solution, but OhOkay this sentence: "Lets see if he can find peace in his soul to play in Glenn Falls, NY" cracked me up.

Breezy just needs to regain his confidence....I still think he will be a Conn Symthe candidate this playoff season, culminating in carrying the Stanley Cup over his head on the Fargo ice. Positive thinking...therapist says this is beneficial.

michael leighton single handedly lost the stanley cup for 2 years ago. i'm not referring to the series winning goal, he was awful in that series. so the turd who mentioned him in a previous post should kick rocks somewhere.

Agreed that Leighton was bad, very bad in the finals, but it was not all him. The D was gassed and the forwards outplayed. They were outshot 41-24 in game 6-- that alone should tell you that you can't hang it alone on the goalie. In the series before that, all Leighton did was set a record with 3 shutouts in one series! He is not a great goalie. Hell, he is probably not even a good goalie, but between the head case, zero playoff wins and zero shutouts bob, and hot one minute cold the next Leighton, I'll take my chances on the hot and cold-- maybe we get lucky.

Can't send Bryz to the minors he has a "No Movement Clause". Trade Bobrovsky to Columbus for a 3rd pick. Use that 3rd Round Pick to acquire Paul Gaustad from Buffalo. Trade JVR to LA Kings for G Jonahan Bernier and a 3rd Rd Pick. Amnesty Bryz after the new CBA is signed.
