Ilya Bryzgalov, the zany goalie who spent two up-and-down seasons with the Flyers before the team bought out his contract last June, is returning to the NHL.

The Edmonton Oilers, who play the Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday afternoon, announced Friday they have a verbal agreement on a one-year with Bryzgalov, who was an unrestricted free agent.

Bryzgalov will go on a conditioning assignment and will not play against the Flyers on Saturday, said an Oilers source. The goalie lives in Haddonfield, and it is not known whether he will attend the game.

The Flyers play in Edmonton on Dec. 30.

"We get a goaltender that has a history of being a high-performer, and we get a guy that's very motivated,” Edmonton general manager Craig MacTavish said, adding “everybody will be pleasantly surprised with the quality of person we’re getting.”

Bryzgalov, 33, will reportedly earn between $2.5-$3 million. The Flyers bought out the last seven years of his $51 million deal, and are paying him a total of $23 million over the next 14 years.

The Oilers (4-11-2) desperately need goaltending help. They are allowing a league-worst 3.82 goals per game.
