Bryz, defense falter as Flyers fall

POSTED: Thursday, October 27, 2011, 1:11 AM

MONTREAL _ Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was shaky and his defense was even worse as the Flyers suffered an embarrassing 5-1 loss to Montreal at the Bell Centre on Wednesday night.

Bryzgalov has allowed 14 goals in his last three starts _ all losses.

So will coach Peter Laviolette use Sergei Bobrovsky when the Flyers host Winnipeg on Thursday?

Doubtful. The Flyers have $51 million committed to Bryzgalov for nine years, and they will give him every chance to get out of his early-season funk.

Bobrovsky, by the way, has been sharp in each of his two starts _ both wins.

The Flyers are 5-3-1, and Bryzgalov is 3-3-1.

Bryzgalov looked in control in the first two games, standing tall and directing rebounds to his teammates. Lately, he looks lost and his body language says he is not confident.

Montreal ended a six-game losing streak, while the Flyers lost for the third time in their last four games.

After a solid first period, the Flyers' defense gave Bryzgalov little support in the final 40 minutes.

Before the game, the Habs fired assistsant Perry Pearn.

"It was a big shock to all the players," said Max Pacioretty after scoring a pair of goals."...It kind of sent a message to the players that they're willing to do what it takes to win hockey games. It showed us no one's job is secure and and we have to bear down at a time like this and do what we can to win."

Stat of the night: The Flyers had just 22 shots _ and had 19 blocked, and fired 16 that missed the net.
