Bryz, G rescue Flyers; no discipline for Kronwall

The Flyers were outshot by a 39-23 margin, and two of their wingers suffered second-period injuries and didn’t return on Tuesday night at the reverberating Wells Fargo Center.

But the Flyers, to their credit, held on for a gritty 3-2 win over visiting Detroit and notched their first three-game winning streak in three months.

The survived injuries to Jaromir Jagr (hip) and Jakub Voracek (mouth) because goalie Ilya Bryzgalov continued his strong play, making 37 saves, including 36 over the final two periods.

“The last month, you see how he works hard and wants to get better,” said center Claude Giroux, who had a goal and an assist despite playing with a sore hand. “His attitude is unbelievable. He wants to win. The guys are very excited and if we can get on a roll here before the playoffs and kind of keep going, it should be fun.”

Giroux’s two points gave him 77 for the season, a career high. He had 76 last season.

In the NHL scoring race, Giroux is third, behind Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin and Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos, each of whom have 81 points.

The Flyers, who host Florida on Thursday, had a 24-10 advantage in blocked shots. Giroux and Erik Gustafsson each blocked three shots, and eight Flyers blocked two.

The Flyers scored just their third win this season when outshot by 10 or more. They were outshot by 16, their largest margin in a victory.

Breakaways. Jagr is listed as day to day, and Voracek received stitches to his upper and lower mouth. Both will be re-evaluated Wednesday, said GM Paul Holmgren….Voracek took a nasty hit to the face by hard-charging Niklas Kronwall, who did not receive any discipline on Wednesday.....The Flyers did not allow a power-play goal for the fourth straight game. Detroit was 0 for 4 with a man advantage….Bryzgalov has a 2.15 GAA and .916 save percentage in his last 10 games…..Giroux was plus-2.

Face-off madness. With a straight face, Giroux insisted his sore left hand _ he was struck with a stick in the previous game _ had nothing to do with the fact he took just two face-offs (0 for 2) and his linemate, Scott Hartnell, took 16 (7 of 16).

Before Tuesday, Giroux had taken 1,259 faceoff this season. Hartnell had taken 18.

“In the playoffs, sometimes I get kicked out (of the faceoff circle), so we want Hartzy to get in there,” Giroux said. “He’s got a heavy stick and works hard for faceoffs.”
