Bryz, G rescue Flyers; no discipline for Kronwall
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
The Flyers were outshot by a 39-23 margin, and two of their wingers suffered second-period injuries and didn’t return on Tuesday night at the reverberating Wells Fargo Center.
But the Flyers, to their credit, held on for a gritty 3-2 win over visiting Detroit and notched their first three-game winning streak in three months.
The survived injuries to Jaromir Jagr (hip) and Jakub Voracek (mouth) because goalie Ilya Bryzgalov continued his strong play, making 37 saves, including 36 over the final two periods.
“The last month, you see how he works hard and wants to get better,” said center Claude Giroux, who had a goal and an assist despite playing with a sore hand. “His attitude is unbelievable. He wants to win. The guys are very excited and if we can get on a roll here before the playoffs and kind of keep going, it should be fun.”
Giroux’s two points gave him 77 for the season, a career high. He had 76 last season.
In the NHL scoring race, Giroux is third, behind Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin and Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos, each of whom have 81 points.
The Flyers, who host Florida on Thursday, had a 24-10 advantage in blocked shots. Giroux and Erik Gustafsson each blocked three shots, and eight Flyers blocked two.
The Flyers scored just their third win this season when outshot by 10 or more. They were outshot by 16, their largest margin in a victory.
Breakaways. Jagr is listed as day to day, and Voracek received stitches to his upper and lower mouth. Both will be re-evaluated Wednesday, said GM Paul Holmgren….Voracek took a nasty hit to the face by hard-charging Niklas Kronwall, who did not receive any discipline on Wednesday.....The Flyers did not allow a power-play goal for the fourth straight game. Detroit was 0 for 4 with a man advantage….Bryzgalov has a 2.15 GAA and .916 save percentage in his last 10 games…..Giroux was plus-2.
Face-off madness. With a straight face, Giroux insisted his sore left hand _ he was struck with a stick in the previous game _ had nothing to do with the fact he took just two face-offs (0 for 2) and his linemate, Scott Hartnell, took 16 (7 of 16).
Before Tuesday, Giroux had taken 1,259 faceoff this season. Hartnell had taken 18.
“In the playoffs, sometimes I get kicked out (of the faceoff circle), so we want Hartzy to get in there,” Giroux said. “He’s got a heavy stick and works hard for faceoffs.”
Uh-huh.

When are you writers going to say something about the non calls in this game. Flyers get penalties, they deserve them. Detroit tripped, slashed, cross-checked and interfered all night and not a penalty until the 3rd period. Babcock couldn't believe the call, but when you see it, the Detroit player chopped the stick out of Schenn's hands. Unless it is brought up, it will go on and on. I don't care if the Flyers get 30 calls a game. If it is a penalty, it should be called. That isn't even including Kronwall's hit on Voracheck. skolman
Why not look at the pre an post all-star game numbers for Bryzgalov since it's a larger sampling size and a logical midpoint in the season? Pre all-star he was 2.99 GAA and 8.95 SVPCT. Post All-star??? 14 games: 2.03 GAA and .924 SVPCT, good for 5th and 10th in the league respectively. He certainly seems to be getting ready for the playoffs. Should the Flyers get healthy in time for the playoffs it does look better than it did just a few weeks ago. I like their youth and speed and their two new giant defensemen. Loved how Grossmann shoved that Red Wing right out of the crease last night. Pavel Kubina is a also a great stand in for Pronger. He brings the intimidation factor back.
As always I'm preparing for the annual spring dissapointment, but I have to say I much prefer Holmgrens style of adding complemtary players rather than Clarke's style of mortgaging the future for a veteran. Think of all the homegrown players he's given up over the years: Rod Drind'amore, Justin Willians, Partick Sharp, Vinny Prospal, Etc. A team has to gel to win championships, maybe or mabye not this will be the year for the Flyers, but I'm optimistic about the near future. bffly
Bryz was the difference last night! Fabulous
Yeah I guess it was a clean hit but the Flyers should have lit up Zetterberg or Filpula in response. n62
Maybe I dont know the rules but the replay clearly showed Kronwall shoulder and body hit Voracek in the face shanehockey28
Kronwall's check was a legal hit, a hockey hit. Voracheck had his head down and was in the trolly tracks. If that hit was suspendable then it is time to shut down checking in the NHL. If a flyer player delivers that hit, there is back slapping and hooting by the fans in orange. I have never heard more whining last night as Kronwall lowered the boom on another European player with his head down. Atlee
Comment removed.- Once again Philly get screwed over for being Philly. OK you can argue it was a clean hit, but Kronwall lined Voracek up, waited till he put his head down, and delivered a lights out elbow to him. Even if it was "clean" he's a prlck for doing such. Now if Zac Rinaldo did the same thing to a Red Wing player you can be sure he'd be fined and suspended for 3 games...
Go Bryz, but no suspension for a hit into his head, only in hockey. N.H.L. sucks and so does Shanahan wlgj
wigj- What do u expect from someone who played for the red wings? Were we ever kidding ourselves that he was going to get suspended. If ronaldo, 5 game suspension. I thought the tap that he had on a detroit player and was called roughing was just to show that he has a target on his back. We could've lost that game but bryz came up big, or a i mean humongous big lol rmd2283
It was an illegal check to the head. I love Kronwall's boarderline hits, but this one crossed it - he was headhunting, and it was avoidable. Similar to the illegal boarding hits nowadays that stemmed from Lemieux - Draper, if the NHL is serious about curtailing concussions, this obvious check to the head is suspendable. playboy
POP QUIZ:
Shanahon won 3 Stanley Cups playing for which hockey team?

Crosby, the concussion poster boy, remarked to Pittsburg media that Kronwall's penalty-free hit on Voracek shows the NHL still isn't serious about eliminating dangerous hits to the head. icarus
