Briere injured; Laliberte recalled

POSTED: Friday, October 30, 2009, 12:18 PM

Danny Briere left practice early Friday because of what Flyers coach John Stevens called "a lower-body injury."

Since Briere missed most of last season with groin and abdominal injuries, alarms are going off in Flyerdom right now.

The Flyers recalled David Laliberte from the AHL Adirondack Phantoms.

Simon Gagne is already sidelined with a double-hernia, and Briere is doubtful for for Saturday against Carolina.

GM Paul Holmgren reported that two of Gagne's doctors have given conflicting solutions to repairing his hernias. The Flyers, Gagne and the doctors are trying to resolve those issues.

On a positive front, it looks like Blair Betts (shoulder) and Ryan Parent (groin) will return from injuries and be back in the lineup Saturday.

Let me guess: Another sports hernia. We'll hear all winter how Briere is preparing for the stretch run, and he'll never make it. What's the deal with all the Flyers injuries year after year? Who's in charge of conditioning?

Briere has turned out to be a huge waste of valuable cap money. Produce in the playoffs this year and all will be forgotten.

snider said "the name of the game is to win!" during the core states center press conference and it is time he backs that up. the phillies needed to win to get the support of the city. we have given the flyers blind support for years and they dont deserve it anymore!!!

As a big Briere fan, this disappoints me, but for some reason I see it as a blessing in disguise. Perhaps this will put more fire under guys like Carter, Hartnell, Giroux to start producing. While I was as excited as anyone about all the scoring prowess on this roster, maybe that is part of what fostered the apparent, "why should I play hard?" attitude. I think a team needs to know who there guys are and maybe too much of a good thing isn't a good thing.

Rumors have circulated for years that the bad ice at the Wac Center is causing all these groin injuries and now I'm starting to believe it. Has anyone compared Flyers' groin injury rate to others in the league?

Scott Hartnell said that he felt like he and his teammates "bodies may have slipped a little" over the 11 day break. Not surprising considering the time off was used on sailing trips and fishing excursions in South Florida. God knows what else went on down there. Certainly not much in the way of exercise.

They really aren't playing all that well with Gagne and Briere.... this could get ugly when they are gone.

rs505, I was just thinking the same thing. The entire conditioning and medical crew need to be tossed out on their keesters as this revolving door of injuries is ridiculous. Stevens in hockey is like Reid in football....no emotion means players can be unaccountable and continue without culpability. This question's been asked by others and I haven't seen a smart response yet - if Stevens is gone, who do we bring in?

It looks like the Flyers are playing with weight vests on. Is it my TV or do they look slow? It looks like Danny and Gag's were playing leap frog again. What a joke these two are. They had 6 months to recover and strengthen their core, what a total lack of disciple to their training regiment.
