Briere injured; Laliberte recalled

POSTED: Friday, October 30, 2009, 12:18 PM

Danny Briere left practice early Friday because of what Flyers coach John Stevens called "a lower-body injury."

Since Briere missed most of last season with groin and abdominal injuries, alarms are going off in Flyerdom right now.

The Flyers recalled David Laliberte from the AHL Adirondack Phantoms.

Simon Gagne is already sidelined with a double-hernia, and Briere is doubtful for for Saturday against Carolina.

GM Paul Holmgren reported that two of Gagne's doctors have given conflicting solutions to repairing his hernias. The Flyers, Gagne and the doctors are trying to resolve those issues.

On a positive front, it looks like Blair Betts (shoulder) and Ryan Parent (groin) will return from injuries and be back in the lineup Saturday.

Gagne and Briere are starting to haunt my memories. The last few years we had Tim Kerr and Mark Howe here -they were both still studs WHEN HEALTHY. But the problem was the team revolved around 2 guys who were hardly in the line up. Sounds awful but you almost hope one of these guys is done for the year so we can make a move to replace him.

holmgren and management will be cowards and fire stevens at some point. blame the coach. not themselves. stevens is not a great coach, but he will be used as a scapegoat so holmgren and others can look innocent. betts comes back too soon because management did a poor job on getting guys who can win faceoffs. so wouldnt be surprised to see him get hurt again.

how can you not blame the coach! his lack of a system has cost the team countless two and three goal leeds. he has obviously lost the players and we have seen countless good coaches forced out for just that reason.

They should fire Stevens. The roster's not 100% right, either, but the coach holds nobody accountable for anything.

Coach is partially to blame for shotty play. Briere is just a bust. When he is there, he plays decent, but after his payday, he is hurt every two weeks. My guess is his conditioning is not stellar. After you get five million a year in guaranteed money, it is a little hard to be motivated. We will never be able to get rid of Briere either...who would take him? And Gagne...he has become soft too!! It is a shame, because we have a very talented team with a decent goalie that has the ability to get hot!! Time will tell!!

i'm not defending stevens since im not a big fan. i just want to point out that management has done a poor job. the jones move should get someone fired. and i dont mean the coach.

I have got to stay positive. I have been a fan since 1970. Come on fans, we have been through to much to talk trash at this point. I'm gonna coin an old American Indian phrase, "Never Judge a Man Until You've Walked a mile in his moccasins!" GO FLYERS!!!!! I will always love you through thick and thin:)

What a bummer. Looks like it's time to get the crazy glue and duck tape ready again. How long before Timonen goes down?

Can someone honestly answer this question: What do the Flyers do wrong with their physical conditioning program? For years, this team has had more players get injuries than any other team that I can remember in any sport. I don't believe that the team is snake bitten. They must be doing something wrong with strength and conditioning. This just goes beyond bad luck.

What are they going to do when the Phillies season ends and distracted fans really start paying attention! Trick or Treat Ed Snider 35 and counting and we seem to be getting further away from the prize and another parade!!!!

I agree with JSaq. As long as Richards buddy is his Coach he will not grow into the Captain(not player) the he can become.
