Bobrovsky to start season opener

POSTED: Thursday, October 7, 2010, 11:46 AM

In a stunning move, Flyers coach Peter Laviolette told the team's website that rookie goalie Sergei Bobrovsky would start the opener Thursday in Pittsburgh.

More to come...

I didn't watch much preseason hockey, but if this was as good as some of you say he was, why not ?

Why not. It will be six months before the NHL season will mean anything.

Relax people, it's game 1. The season doesn't really start until the end of March anyway. Remember the Flyers snuck in to the playoffs and went to the cup finals. Chill the frick out.

that's an interesting choice. Hopefully it is the start to his legend, and not a rookie collapse

    Pronger must be playing.
Either way I agree with the "why not's".....give the kid a shot.

I really want his nickname to be "The Dude", as in, The Big Bobrovsky.

He barely faced any NHL level players in the preseason, he is not ready to face Crosby and Malkin

For the naysayers you do realize bob came over from a league that's arguably better than the ahl. He played very well in the preseason and deserves this chance

Pronger is not playing. Starting Bobrovsky seems a bit risky to me. Boucher was every bit as good as Bobrovsky in the preseason, and without Pronger it seems a bit of a risk.

I am OK with this, but think starting him in St. Louis would have been the better choice, as there would have been a lot less pressure on the kid (not division rival game, not on national cable TV, not the season opener, not in the opening of a new building, not against a lethal offense). We've thrown him into the fire--don't be surprised if he gets burnt. Let's be clear about one thing--preseason play is not in and of itself a good reason to start anyone. Remember Jon Sim? That guy was a lethal force in preseason for the Flyers in 2006 (i believe that is the year), leading the team in points and goals. How did he turn out in the regular season? Enough said.

In coaching, talent should always outweigh logic. Who knows maybe for the first time in years we will not have a goalie controversy!

Reminds me of 1986-87 season opener when Mike Keenan started a rookie by the name of Hextall.

Let him experience the Pens' new stadium, their Iron City-induced fans, opening night and that team from the bench tonight and get a taste of the NHL when the games really count. Start him Saturday in a less pressurized situation in St. Louis. Pre-season means oon-gotts.
