Bob looking like Flyers' playoff goalie

POSTED: Sunday, March 20, 2011, 10:08 AM

DALLAS -- Except for a somewhat shaky stretch in the last few weeks, Flyers goalies Sergei Bobrovsky and Brian Boucher have been consistently good this season.

Yet, you could count on one hand the number of times they had stolen a game.

Saturday was one of those rare occurences.

Bobrovsky was superb _ especially in the shootout, when he was at his acrobatic best and allowed just one goal in six shots _ as the Flyers outlasted Dallas, 3-2.

Coach Peter Laviolette played it coy on Saturday, saying he hasn't selected his playoff goalie.

But it's looking more and more like it will be Bob, with Boucher ready to step in if he falters.

From here, it's a wise choice.

What's your take?

Bob scares me....he has the Leigton syndrome with too many softees, not good for playoff hockey. yet they will prob go with Bob, then have Boosh if he fails. Boosh played well in the playoffs last year, yet idk if he can stay afloat at his best playin every other night for 2 months straight. Same boat as always....goalie questions. Will this ever end???

As I have stated elsewhere, the thing that worries me is that Bob goes down faster than an Arch Street working girl with the rent due. Everyone in the league has figured that out and shoots high. He appears much smaller in net than he is actually because of it. But there is no denying his fantastically quick reflexes. The key IMHO, is for the Flyers to limit the quality shots on him. It's easier than expecting him to be miraculous on every shot. Sink or swim with Bob.

2 backups don't equal one solid #1. both of these guys make me nervous. guess i'd prefer bob but i'm not expecting much.

Bob played well last night, but I don't think anything's settled as far as playoff starter goes. Starting out with Bob, and having Boucher ready as a plan B sounds the safest, but I think that either guy is fine, so long as the team plays better.

they cant shut anybody out because the goalies suck,,,, i mean anybody,,the rangers goalie has nine and both of the flyers goalies have zeroooooo...thats total suckage,,,when you need a stop in the playoffs they dont have it....

That "Ranger's goalie" is one of the league's top goalies.
They don't need shutouts. They need to play better in front of both these guys. Do that, then suddenly they're both better goalies. I'm comfortable with both. I think starting the rookie with the vet in the wings makes sense. Obviously I'd like to see the Flyers win the cup. I'd love to see it with Boosh between the pipes.

oh if we had only gotten a goalie instead of Versteeg...BUT, with that being said, we do have two above average goalies...the key might be the defense limiting the number of quality shots the opposing team has...if you remember our "d" last year made Leighton look pretty good...sure looks like the plan is to keep Bob fresh and rested...and if his lack of English helps keep the fan distraction at a minimum, nah, I guess a Philly boo is universal...let's hope Bob can do it...

What will be interesting is how fast a hook Laviollete will have no matter which goalie starts.

I'm probably going to be in the minority here, but IMO soft goals = losing in playoffs. I love Bob's potential, but he gives up too many softies right now. Boosh may not "steal" a game for you, but he's alot less likely to lose it for you. I'd go with Boosh.

One good game in his last ten and suddenly he's a savior. Bring back Cechmanek.

Bob is going to be the real thing, and this if he isn't already... Bob style is similar to Fluery and if I am not mistaken he did win those Pens, we hate so much, win a Cup.. Any one that can't see how good Bob is, ether does not a thing about hockey and obviously has never played the postion. We will see how many of you band wagon jumper change you mind when we are watching Bob stand on head, and sipping the bubbly from Lord Stanley's Cup..

You hit it on the head, Sam.
Bob STOLE that game. That amazing kick save in the OT clearly showed that he should be the starting goalie. I have never seen anyone so quick side to side.

Props to Bob for a very good performance over the weekend. String together at least 3 of those in a row, and i'll partake in the kool-aid with the rest of ya. Don't understand anointing him our starting goalie based on one save in one game (VicM's comment). In other news, Leighton continues to be lights out for the lowly Phantoms, leading them to another win (3-1), making 38 saves on 39 shots. He now has saved 87 of the last 90 shots he has faced, posting a save percentage of .924 overall, GAA of 2.24, and 3 shutouts (and this on one of the worst teams in AHL history)--all of his numbers have improved as he has seen more time coming off his injury. His stats for the Flyers last year continue to be better in all major categories (save percentage, GAA, shutouts, winning percentage) than what Bob or Boosh have done this year. Bottom line: less pucks go into the net when Leights is in goal. When that changes, i'll change my tune, but until then the call for Leights come playoff time continues.
