Mason to start; offense looks to get going

For the fourth time in five games, Steve Mason will get the start in goal for the Flyers in tonight’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes at the Wells Fargo Center.

Mason has a 2.02 goals against average and a .935 save percentage. He made 33 saves during Tuesday’s 2-1 win over the visiting Florida Panthers in coach Craig Berube’s debut. That stopped the Flyers opening three-game losing streak.

“He has been solid like all training camp I liked him,” Berube said after this morning’s optional skate at the Wells Fargo Center. “He has looked really big in net, puck’s active, handling the puck well and challenging at the right times and has looked really good for me.”

The Flyers play in Detroit on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Berube was asked if he would go with Ray Emery in goal since it is the second of a back to back.

“We will see how it goes,” Berube said.

Phoenix (2-2) is coming off Thursday’s 4-2 win at Detroit so the Flyers will look to start strong against a Coyotes team that may have trouble finding their collective legs.

“Phoenix played yesterday so we have to get on them right away,” captain Claude Giroux said.

Giroux is looking for his first point after four games and feels it is a matter of time before an offense that has scored five goals in four games gets going.

“We got to keep the pucks, go to the net and our chances will be there and it will start going in there soon,” Giroux said.
