Mason happy to be joining Flyers

POSTED: Wednesday, April 3, 2013, 3:01 PM

Steve Mason said he was ecstatic to be traded today to the Flyers. The Columbus Blue Jackets traded the 24-year-old goalie for goalie Michael Leighton and a third round pick in 2015.

“I am more than thrilled to have this opportunity and have a fresh start,” Mason said in comments distributed by the Flyers.

Mason hasn’t come close to matching his production when he won the Calder Cup as Rookie of the Year in 2008-2009. That was his lone playoff season when he recorded a 2.29 goals against average and recorded 10 shutouts in 61 games.

This season he was 3-6-1 while backing up former Flyer Sergei Bobrovsky in Columbus.

When asked if Mason would back up Ilya Bryzgalov, general manager Paul Holmgren said, "He is one of our two goalies, not only for this season but moving forward."

Mason, who will be a restricted free agent, talked about being a teammate with Bryzgalov.

"I am looking forward to working with him," Mason said.

Here's video of Flyers' GM Paul Holmgren adressing the media:

"He is one of our two goalies." said GM Paul Holmgren, "we plan on playing them both at the same time, since we have no defense to speak of."

wmichael: LOL maybe if we could play both of them we would do better....mostly not. At least the cost wasn't too bad a 2015 3rd rounder (who cares about Leaky). If Mason can regain part of his rookie form he isa good goalie if he can do 2.45 or lower GAA and 9.20 % he is a step above Brzy. I just hope that Lavy plays this kid for about half of the remaining games this season so we can see what he has and if nothign we let him walk after the season. But knowing Hommer he will sign him to a 3 year deal for 3.1 million cap hit and keep Brzy too.... Lets hope amason regains his form.

This makes NO sense! Why don't you just bench Bryz now and tell the fans you've given up on this season because that guy is not stepping in and taking us to the playoffs and you pretty much just told Bryz that he's gone in a few weeks.

Nice move Homer. Damn you are terrible at your job

We need to trade for a new GM.
One with Leadership skill, sense of direction, pro-active with credibility.
Homer is lost in the wood gazing at the stars...probably burns too many bridges...Flyers is a big joke in the new NHL.

Brinks69-Honestly do you really think this team is good enough to go anywhere in the playoffs anyway. I really don't think it matters this year about getting in. I know anything can happen if you get in, but I think they'd be better off getting a good draft pick and either using it or trading it for a young dman
