Sestito on leaving: It's bittersweet

Tom Sestito was able to use some humor while going out the door. After being placed on waivers by the Flyers, the 25-year-old winger was claimed on Friday by the Vancouver Canucks.

Sestito came to the Flyers two years ago when he was acquired from Columbus on Feb. 28, 2011.

He had two goals in 12 career games for Columbus and two more in 21 games for the Flyers. Both Flyers goals came in this year’s 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay on Feb. 5.

“I left Columbus with two goals and left here with two hopefully with Vancouver I leave with a lot more,” Sestito said after packing up his locker and leaving the Skate Zone.

Sestito enjoyed the team but understands that he wasn’t getting much playing time with the Flyers.

“My reaction is bittersweet,” he said. “I loved it here in Philly and now I have a new chance with a great organization.”

Sestito said he saw rumors on Twitter that he would be in Edmonton and was surprised when he was told he was claimed by the Canucks. He did say it’s a relief to know where his next destination is.

“The last 24 hours have been pretty hectic,” he said. “You don’t know where you are going and could go anywhere and I’m happy it’s over and happy it’s Vancouver.”

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette praised a player who he simply couldn’t find enough ice time for.

“He was a good Flyer,” Laviolette said. “He kind of had a hard time finding the lineup for us and I am sure he will be fine.”

Goalie Michael Leighton has cleared waivers and been assigned to the Phantoms.
