Crosby: A series you want to be a part of

POSTED: Saturday, April 7, 2012, 9:07 PM

Are you confident the Phillies will get their act together?
Yes. It’s only April and way too early to be concerned.
Maybe. I’m not in a panic, but I am worried a bit.
No. Losing two games to the pitiful Pirates showed me this depleted team will struggle to compete.

PITTSBURGH _ After Pittsburgh notched a meaningless 4-2 win over the Flyers to end the regular season Saturday, Penguins star Sidney Crosby was asked if his team sent a message to the visitors.

“No, I think the teams will dictate that message when the series starts,” he said.

The cross-state rivals will begin their Eastern Conference quarterfinals on Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

“Today was just a weird game," said Crosby after collecting a goal and an assist. “I think the teams will show their true colors in Game 1.”

The Flyers won the season series, four games to two. They were 2-1 against the Pens in games Crosby played.

Pittsburgh went on an 18-4-1 run to end the season.

“We wanted to finish strong,” Crosby said. “The real thing starts now. I expect a lot of intensity _ if anything prior to this is an indication. It’s the kind of series you want to be a part of.”

The Flyers also finished strong, going 13-5-2 in their last 20 games.

Flyers winger Scott Hartnell admitted there’s no love lost between the teams.

“There's guys there that you don't like that are obviously some of the best players in the league,” he said. “You see them on the highlights every night and it annoys you. For us to win this series, we're going to have to hold those guys down. I don't think you have to look very hard to get your blood boiling.”

Let it boil Scotty, you've been awful the last 5 games so its time to get your game going again. Were gonna our grinders like you, Simmonds, Rinaldo, Couts, and Talbot to get some very importaant secondary scoring.
    Flyers in 5.
    Fabulous

Meaningless?! If the Cryers won, I bet it wouldn't have been so meaningless! Stand by folks, this is just a preview of the opening round!

Hey Fabulous, I can't speak for the rest of your grinders, but as a Penguin fan I can tell you with absolute certainty that Max Talbot will come up big when you need him. He's just one of those special players. We miss him in the Burgh. Jagr.....not so much.

I find it hilarious how much attention other teams give the Penguins...it's quite a compliment. @Fabulous...send me some of whatever you were smoking when you said Flyers in 5...Pens in 7...HOME ICE ADVANTAGE WINS!!!

Whining / Dirty Redefined. Well Well. Flyers (fans, coaches, players) run their yaps all week saying that Crosby and Malkin are dirty. Asst coach even encouraged flyers to "take a run at them" (is that dirty?) All that happened was both Crosby and Malkin scoring goals, effectively putting the game out of reach. What did the Flyers accomplish? .... a game misconduct by Rinaldo....for what? a dirty play. So I check this blog for the Philly reaction and I just see more of the same. Juvenile comments and idiocy.

Flyers in 5. Every Pit fan I know agrees with that. They are very sad about it, but understand that this is the worst Pens team that they've seen in years. I kind of feel sorry for them. If all you Pit posters here come back after the series, I'll apologize for our team beating you too. So make sure you come back. Go Flyers.

Flyers in 6. Bryz throws up the wall, and Simmonds leads the Flyers in scoring.

All the attention and accolades are flying towards the Pens, that's the Flyers greatest advantage, the Pens thinking they can free wheel with Crosby and Malkin. Dont think either superstar will be willing or able to get to the dirty areas to score goals.
If Crosby thinks no one will go after him shift after shift with body checks and slashes after whistles, he's dreaming. Yes he has played 20 games but he does not look physically able or capable of getting whacked, hacked, and slashed in the playoffs. Every game I have seen him play since he came back, he has been avoiding contact, he wont be able to escape it in the playoffs, especially against the hard nosed Flyers.
As for Malkin, that kid wont be able to keep his cool after the birage of physical attention, he will be in the box steady, he is a hot head and easily able to frustrate.
And for Flower, the Flyers have figured him out, cross ice one timers and big bodies in front.

The only way the Pens win is if the officiating is totally one sided, NHL cannot afford a debacle,Flyers easily in 5!
    Fabulous

Flyers in 5 over the most arrogant organization in the league. Oh, and if you ever see my name on a toxic waste Pitt website, you know I hit rock bottom.

    Pens in 6.
Regardless of how anyone feels about the season finale, I will say that it was tightly officiated, which, to me, allowed for a better "brand" of NHL-caliber hockey. Sadly I don't think that level of officiating will continue through the playoffs.

@420Philly - Pens fans are here because the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a link, and most of us like to get the opposing city's perspective, regardless of how ridiculous it is.

The Flyers are very fortunate to have Talbot; he is big money in big games. Asham serves the same role for the Pens, though not as versatile as Talbot.

Looking forward to a great series; we've got tickets to games 1 & 2. May the best team win.
