Time to end the charade and start paying college athletes?

POSTED: Saturday, August 20, 2011, 5:00 AM

Should college athletes be paid?
Yes, why should coaches make all the big bucks?
No, scholarships are payment enough.
Yes, make college a minor league for the pros.
No, amateur athletics are an ideal worth preserving

The scandal at the University of Miami's  athletics program, where a booster has admitted to lavishing athletes with favors and gifts, including access to prostitutes, has some observers wondering if it's time to end the charade of amateurism in college athletics and start paying the athletes. Critics point out that the athletes work for a pittance (a scholarship) compared to what coaches are paid and what colleges collect from broadcast rights and alumni donations.
