Smartphone paywars: JPMorgan Chase Pay goes live

At Starbucks and Best Buys; plans ShopRite, Conoco add soon

After years in development, JPMorgan, Chase & Co. says it has put its new Chase Pay digital payment system online today "in store, in app and online." The bank's 100 million customers can now use Chase Pay iPhone and Google apps, instead of cards, to pay from their Chase Visa accounts at 7,500 Starbucks locations and 1,400 Best Buy stores, and to review recent account transactions.

Chase Pay offers merchants "lower costs and zero fraud liability," making it more attractive than rival mobile-payment systems, Jennifer Roberts, president of Chase strategic alliances and loyalty solutions, said in a statement. Apple, Google, Walmart and others have developed their own rival payment apps.

Touch ID is already live for Chase Pay, says spokesman Ed Kozmor. The bank plans to add merchants including Walmart, Wakefern Corp.'s ShopRite and Fresh Grocer stores, Phillips 66 and Conoco 76 stores and gas stations, and participating Shell stations, "in the near future."

Based in New York, with banking, investment and tech operations worldwide, JPMorgan employs around 9,000 at its consumer payments business, software center and other operations in Wilmington and Newark, Del.
