President Obama's 2014 budget proposal includes three building projects in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The President asks Congress for $10 million to keep the two principal federal buildings in Philadelphia from falling apart -- and $31 million to buy Newark's post office and remake into government offices honoring U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-NJ.
1) Philadelphia, Robert N. C. Nix Sr. Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse - Request: $3,416,000: "The President’s FY 2014 budget is requesting.. an exterior alteration project to repair and restore the deteriorated façade and windows at the Robert N.C. Nix Federal Building and Courthouse located at 900 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA. The Nix FBCT is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the potential for additional deterioration of the façade and windows and the life safety hazards associated falling debris require urgent attention...
2) Philadelphia, William J. Green Jr. Federal Building - Request: $6,500,000: "The President’s FY 2014 budget is requesting $6.5 million for a repair and alteration of the William J. Green Jr. Federal Building located at 600 Arch Street in Philadelphia, PA. The project will address the long term housing needs of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration Field Division Office, and the Internal Revenue Service Field Office. The renovation of tenant spaces, restacking of non-contiguous occupancies on floors three through ten, building system repairs, and security upgrades will meet the long term needs of the tenant agencies and significantly improve their current space utilization. This phase seeks Committee approval for design during FY 2014."
3) Newark, Frank R. Lautenberg U.S. Post Office and Courthouse - Request: $31,000,000: "The President’s FY 2014 budget is requesting $31,000,000 to acquire the Frank Lautenberg U.S. Post Office and Courthouse located at 2 Federal Square, in Newark, NJ. GSA seeks to acquire the building from the United States Postal Service for no more than $23,000,000. In addition, GSA will invest $8,000,000 to begin the modernization and rehabilitation of the building infrastructure and tenant space. The project will also address critical life safety and accessibility issues."
