How many Comcast customers will cut cable this time?

More than a quarter of a million people, net, will likely cancel Comcast "basic video" cable in this last quarter of 2010, David C. Joyce, media analyst at Miller Tabak & Co., New York, told clients in a report today after checking sources.

That's worse than the 200,000 who tore up their Comcast basic cable bills a year ago,  though not quite so bad as the 275,000 in the third quarter.

But Joyce expects Comcast will mark at least as many "digital video net adds," though that's less than he originally projected.

Still, Joyce is optimistic long-term, because he expects the "Watch with Xfinity" button popping up on Comcast online customers' surfing screens (via, for example, Comcast's iPad Xfinity TV app) will keep most of the company's monthly checks coming while helping "fend off other technological competitors such as Google TV, Apple TV, Roku, Boxee Box, iVi, Sezmi, and even Hulu."
