Free sandwiches from Dietz & Watson

Dietz & Watson, which employs 650 at its Tacony St. sausage and cold-cuts plant, says it'll be giving out free sandwiches at Dilworth Plaza west of Philadelphia City Hall next Thursday, Oct. 1, during lunchtime, starting at 11 a.m.

Dietz & Watson, which employs 650 at its Tacony St. sausage and cold-meats plant, says it'll be giving out free sandwiches at Dilworth Plaza west of Philadelphia City Hall next Thursday, Oct. 1, during lunchtime, starting at 11.

Also: Taste tests against rival lunchmeats. And free Tastykakes.

The idea is to celebrate Dietz & Watson's founding by boss Louis Eni's grandfather, Gottlieb Dietz, 70 years ago -and to publicize the family firm's campaign against Florida lunchmeat conglomerate Boar's Head, which Dietz & Watson says has tried to drive rival products out of grocery meat-cases by pushing exclusive contracts. Boar's Head didn't return my call.

The free menu lists "Buffalo Chicken with Roasted Garlic Cheddar, London Broil Roast Beef with Horseradish Cheddar and Gourmet Lite Turkey Breast with Muenster."
