American Water joins S. Jersey corporate migration to Camden

New HQ for 600 will replace suburban offices

More from the Inquirer's Allison Steele here. -- American Water Works Company Inc. plans to consolidate 600 workers from its current Voorhees headquarters and five other South Jersey facilities into a new building at One Water Street, Camden. Construction will start this fall and should be done in late 2018, the for-profit municipal-utility owner said in a statement today.

CEO Susan Story in her statement cited the allure of the Camden waterfront, where Liberty Property Trust has promised a $1 billion, 1.5 million square foot corporate office development to include American and other companies, plus a hotel, stores and houses. Story also said a single building would help currently scattered workers operate "collaboratively."

Holt International, Subaru of America and other suburban companies are also moving their offices to the long-depressed former industrial city, with assistance from state tax breaks and grants.  Mayor Dana L. Redd called Camden "fortunate" to be adding American Water to its growing corporate roster.

Robert A.M. Sterns will design the water company headquarters. Gensler is the internal designer.  American Water employs 6,700 serving water and wastewater customers across the U.S.
