Montco, Bucks groceries closing

POSTED: Friday, January 18, 2013, 11:51 AM

Bottom Dollar Foods, a cut-rate grocery chain operated by the non-union Delhaize America supermarket group, is closing its stores in North Wales, Montgomery County; in Chalfont, Bucks County; and in Reading, reports Supermarket News and Dave Goodman's Running with Equity Retail blog.

Bottom Dollar began opening stores in the Philadelphia area in 2010. "We made a few mistakes in terms of opening at the beginning," Delhaize chief financial officer Pierre Bouchot told investors in the company's annual conference call yesterday.

Delhaize closed 126 U.S. supermarkets, mostly Food Lions, last year, and plans to close another 8 Food Lions and 33 Sweet Bay markets this year.

But Bouchot insisted the chain has not given up on building the Bottom Dollar line: "When you are developing a new store format, you learn throughout the first two years... We'll be continuing to open, in the coming years, Bottom Dollar Food in those two cities." He hopes the chain will be profitable by 2015.

interesting they chose chalfont & north wales, while they are higher incomes there the product mix bottom dollar offers is just that, with regular chains sharpening their prices in some cases these stores won't survive, i only have one in bensalem about 20 minutes south of me, and in 1 visit i nor my wife were impressed, their prices were actually higher than our local giant, shop-rite & wal-mart so is it worth the trip, no and i closing a message for avaitor " go reproduce yourself "

I live in a retirement community right in the middle of North Wales & Chalfont. It blows my mind that they closed BOTH stores. Not everyone is wealthy up in the Montgomeryville area. People do live in apartments & have fixed incomes. Everytime I go to Bottom Dollar, there's hardly anyone there. Yet Trader Joe's is always packed despite their ridiculous prices. In this day & age, people choose style & flair over substance. Idiots...I've never been so upset about something closing, not even Veterans Stadium & Denny's. Bottom Dollar should've had a better name. People like aviator judge a store solely by the name. Had it been called Top Dollar, he would've shopped there. I once bought 4 packs of Hatfield bacon there for $1 each. They have awesome deals there.

The ground beef sold at Bottom Dollar has marks where the jockey was hitting it.

The supermarket competition in this area is unreal; too cut-throat for every retailer to live harmoniously.

What, a NON UNION store failed? I thought unions were responsible for all market failures and no unions guaranteed success!

Alot of middle to upper class people shop at places like Bottom Dollar foods and Walmart. How do you think those people who drive a Mercedes got them? By pissing their money away at Wegmans and Superfresh all the time?

... I occasionally shop at the bottom dollar in King of Prussia because I like their produce selection and their frozen food selection. It's a pretty good store and meets my needs.

I shop at Bottom Dollar for certain items and I'm a solidly middle-class guy. So do some of my friends-- one's an accountant, one is a chemist, and another is a doctor. We don't really care who else is in the store.

I like Aldi myself...less of a name brand selection than bottom dollar but I thought their prices were better..but snack foods at bottom dollar are dirt cheap. i wouldn't pay much mind to aviator..he's probably some 14 year old that thinks spending 90 buck for jeans makes you 'cool'...

@aviator-Bottom dollar have fresh veggies and unusually good can foods, such as their Italian string beans. In addition as my online name indicates, I am a chemist. And being a chemist for over 20 years, I make a 6 figure salary. If that's what you call a bottom dweller, it's the best bottom dweller you'll ever hear from

We got a 21 lb Jenny-O Thanksgiving turkey there for 29 cents a pound. You probably paid a buck sixty nine and that's just plain stupid. You are mean spirited and a perfect example of what is wrong with people nowadays.

I am also a food snob, so when I go into a Bottom Dollar I make sure I wear dark sunglasses to disguise my identity.

Hey Aviator - Do you realize how horrible of a statement you made? Just imagine if you are a respectable family of four, trying to make ends meet so you shop at the best places you can afford. Imagine what a father, mother would be thinking about themselves after reading such a harsh comment. Even worse imagine their child reading it and see that they get their groceries there. You may very well change a childs life with cold harsh comments such as that.

No big loss. Bottom Dollar shoppers are bottom dwellers.

Right and 5Below isn't doing well in those neighborhoods...

    Please, you have no clue.

Thank Obama for this...each one of these companies couldn't sustain the additional bureaucratic costs associated with Obamacare.
