Montco, Bucks groceries closing

POSTED: Friday, January 18, 2013, 11:51 AM

Bottom Dollar Foods, a cut-rate grocery chain operated by the non-union Delhaize America supermarket group, is closing its stores in North Wales, Montgomery County; in Chalfont, Bucks County; and in Reading, reports Supermarket News and Dave Goodman's Running with Equity Retail blog.

Bottom Dollar began opening stores in the Philadelphia area in 2010. "We made a few mistakes in terms of opening at the beginning," Delhaize chief financial officer Pierre Bouchot told investors in the company's annual conference call yesterday.

Delhaize closed 126 U.S. supermarkets, mostly Food Lions, last year, and plans to close another 8 Food Lions and 33 Sweet Bay markets this year.

But Bouchot insisted the chain has not given up on building the Bottom Dollar line: "When you are developing a new store format, you learn throughout the first two years... We'll be continuing to open, in the coming years, Bottom Dollar Food in those two cities." He hopes the chain will be profitable by 2015.

I live in a retirement community right in the middle of North Wales & Chalfont. It blows my mind that they closed BOTH stores. Not everyone is wealthy up in the Montgomeryville area. People do live in apartments & have fixed incomes. Everytime I go to Bottom Dollar, there's hardly anyone there. Yet Trader Joe's is always packed despite their ridiculous prices. In this day & age, people choose style & flair over substance. Idiots...I've never been so upset about something closing, not even Veterans Stadium & Denny's. Bottom Dollar should've had a better name. People like aviator judge a store solely by the name. Had it been called Top Dollar, he would've shopped there. I once bought 4 packs of Hatfield bacon there for $1 each. They have awesome deals there.

interesting they chose chalfont & north wales, while they are higher incomes there the product mix bottom dollar offers is just that, with regular chains sharpening their prices in some cases these stores won't survive, i only have one in bensalem about 20 minutes south of me, and in 1 visit i nor my wife were impressed, their prices were actually higher than our local giant, shop-rite & wal-mart so is it worth the trip, no and i closing a message for avaitor " go reproduce yourself "
