Young and the restless

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Despite a shaky start and a half-hearted effort, Penn State breezed past Temple, 45-3, yesterday. Both teams were battling injuries to their quarterbacks (bear with me). Temple lost starter Adam DiMichele early and thus any chances of knocking off a heavy favorite. The Lions lost coach Joe Paterno, the 81-year-old former quarterback, when he moved from the sidelines up to the coaches' box for the seconfd half to rest his achey, breaky legs.

Paterno wasn't in the mood to discuss his leg woes and bristled at reporters. I sat directly across the coach in the front row at the press conference and I have never seen Joe as disheveled. He had trouble climbing the stairs onto the podium, his hair was a mess and he looked a tad delusional. He still delivered a few barbs at reporters. But it was not your usual Joe. By the way, Paterno once again became the all-time winningest Division I-A coach with 376 wins when Bobby Bowden and Florida State lost last night. Bowden is stuck at 375.
