Penn State-Indiana halftime update

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --

1. Stephfon Green took over for running back Evan Royster and had two nice runs -- a six and a five yarder -- before Daryll Clark hit a wide open Derrick Williams for a 40-yard touchdown. It was a play-action to Green with Williams running a skinny post. Clark underthrew him a little bit, but Williams adjusted, made the catch and sauntered into the end zone to give Penn State a 7-0 lead.

2. Indiana, though, struck back on its second play from scrimmage on its next possession. Running back Marcus Thigpen run into a gaggle of Lions defenders, kicked it outside and raced untouched into the end zone for a 57-yard and tie score.

3. Clark looks timid, plain and simple. Here are his first half numbers: 13 of 20 for 155 yards and a touchdown. Not bad, but he fumbled on the one-yard line and took two bad sacks.

4. Penn State finally used its three timeouts leftover from last week's debacle. With Indiana stuck inside its own 2 with a minute to go, the Lions burned their timeouts in anticipation that they would get the ball back with ample time to mount some sort of drive. They forced the Hoosiers three and out and Nate Stupar blocked the punt giving the Lions first and ten on the Indiana 20-yard line with 35 seconds left. Penn State got a 32-yard field goal from Kevin Kelly out of the deal and went to the locker room ahead, 10-7.

5. That was not the type of first-half statement this team wanted to make on the heels of last week's disaster.

6. A few injury updates: Josh Gaines started the game at defensive end, but after a few plays went to the sideline, never to be seen again before the break. He sprained his ankle last week and appeared to re-aggravate it. Safety drew Astorino was back playing the nickel. Astorino broke the thumb on his left hand against Ohio State three weeks ago, but only played during special teams last week against Iowa.
