Penn State to renew rivalry with West Virginia in 2023

Penn State and West Virginia, a pair of long-time rivals, will play a two-game series in 2023 and 2024, the universities' athletic directors announced Thursday.

The athletic directors of Penn State and West Virginia announced Thursday that the two long-time rivals will resume their series with games in 2023 and 2024.

The Nittany Lions will host the Mountaineers at Beaver Stadium on Sept. 2, 2023, and WVU will return the favor in Morgantown on Aug. 31, 2024.

"We are excited to announce this football series with West Virginia," Penn State athletic director Dave Joyner said in a statement. "The renewal of our West Virginia rivalry is a series our alumni and fans have wanted to see on our future schedules."

Penn State and West Virginia have not played in football since 1992, the year before the Nittany Lions began competing in the Big Ten Conference. The Lions hold a 48-9-2 lead in the series, which was played every year between 1947 and 1992.

The Mountaineers and Penn State have met 59 times, trailing only Pittsburgh (96) and Syracuse (71) as the Lions' most frequently played opponents.

The Nittany Lions and Pittsburgh will meet every season from 2016 through 2019.
