Penn State notes: Hackenberg sets two career passing records in win

Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg set Penn State career records for passing yards and completions in Saturday's 31-30 win over Maryland.

There never seemed to be much doubt that Christian Hackenberg eventually would become Penn State's all-time passing leader if he stayed healthy, which he finally did on Saturday in his 33rd career game.

Hackenberg's season-high 315-yard performance enabled him to establish the school's career record for passing yards. Hackenberg surpassed Zack Mills with a 40-yard completion to Chris Godwin in the first quarter and ended the game with 7,453 yards, compared to 7,212 for Mills, who played from 2001 to 2004.

With 13 completions Saturday, the junior also set the career record in that department with 608, two ahead of Mills.

"Yeah, that's awesome," he said. "For me, I don't think that's something that's going to hit me until later on down the road. It was really cool to go out and get that done and have my teammates around making plays. That's a product of a lot of things, a lot of great players coming through here and helping me out.

"Obviously you're aware of it but I don't ever try and make it about me or about anyone. Right now it's about coming out of here bowl eligible, six wins, and bouncing back for next week."

Hackenberg's three touchdown passes gave him 43 at Penn State, tying Daryll Clark for second on the all-time list. He also notched his 18th game of 200 or more yards to tie Matt McGloin for first place.
