Penn State left out of AP Top 25

Penn State was left out of the AP preseason Top 25 for the first time since 2005. The Nittany Lions received the second-most votes (75) outside the Top 25.

Oklahoma is No. 1, while Alabama, Oregon, LSU and Boise State round out the top five, respectively.

Tenth-ranked Nebraska is the highest-ranked team from the Big Ten. Wisconsin is right behind at No. 11, while Michigan State is No. 17 and Ohio State is No. 18.

Penn State's schedule features four ranked opponents, highlighted by No. 2 Alabama. The Lions also play the Cornhuskers, Badgers and Buckeyes.

Penn State checked in at No. 25 in the USA TODAY preseason coaches poll released earlier this month.

Last year, the Nittany Lions were ranked 19th in the AP preseason poll and finished 7-6. Being unranked to start the season could be a good omen for them. In 2005, they went 11-1 and won the Orange Bowl.
