Paterno press conference

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Joe Paterno's Media Day press conference was full of all the usual JoePaisms and ancedotes. But he did provide a few newsworthy responses:

1. The three suspended players -- linebacker Navorro Bowman, tight end Andrew Quarless and cornerback Knowledge Timmons -- are still suspended until Paterno says he sees their grades. He did say that they're "all with us," which probably translates to "they'll be with the team at the start of the season unless they screw up in some way."

2. Paterno gave no reason for the dismissals of defensive tackles Chris Baker and Phil Taylor. He said he didn't want to get "into all that." The fact is Baker and Taylor are gone. They screwed up and it's perhaps time to move on. He did say that the ESPN "Outside the Lines" report had no bearing on his decision to drop the players even though it occurred a few days after the segment aired.

3. As for the OTL report, Paterno said he didn't watch. Go figure.

4. As for injuries thus far in practice, cornernack A.J. Wallace had a hamstring pull, but should be OK.

5. There has been no decision at quarterback. Paterno said he may take three or four games to pick a starter. That likely means Daryll Clark and Pat Devlin will split duties through the non-coference schedule. Paterno did say that he "would prefer to play one quarterback."

6. Paterno said that redshirt freshman running back Stephfon Green could carry the ball 20-25 times a game. That doesn't mean he's starting over Evan Royster, but it was probably meant to motivate the first stringer.

Back with more later.
