Paterno to retire at end of season

Joe Paterno will retire at the end of the 2011 season, his son has confirmed.

Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season, according to his son, Scott Paterno.

The Associated Press, quoting a source, initially reported Paterno's retirement, which the coach's son confirmed to the Harrisburg Patriot News.

The 84-year-old Paterno's retirement was hastened by the sex abuse scandal that has rocked the university.

Paterno, in his 46th season as Penn State's head coach, has established a record for most victories by a Division I coach, having won his 409th game on Oct. 29. He will coach his last home game Saturday against Nebraska.

Paterno is expected to speak on the sex abuse scandal later Wednesday. A report that ESPN's Tom Rinaldi will have a 1-on-1 interview with Paterno has not been confirmed.
